It has settled in well in its kitchen spot. Taking its time to establish itself. Great. Thank you for these three high-quality plants.

Description

The Senecio herreianus 'Purple Flush' is a sought-after succulent plant prized for its trailing habit and unique foliage. Its purple to deep purple stems bear fleshy, banana-shaped leaves that turn purple in bright light. Ideal for hanging displays, this easy-to grow plant will add a whimsical touch to your décor. To enhance its purple hue, place it near a south- or west-facing window. Low-maintenance and resistant to diseases and pests, this variety is perfect for beginners. The secret to its success? Avoid overwatering, especially in summer, and choose a well-draining pot to prevent root rot.

The Senecio herreianus, also known as the 'string of pearls' plant, is a succulent species belonging to the Asteraceae family. Native to the arid regions of Namibia in southern Africa, this plant has adapted to dry environments by developing fleshy leaves capable of storing water. The Senecio herreianus 'Purple Flush' is a horticultural cultivar. This variety is distinguished by its trailing purple stems which can grow up to 80 cm long, adorned with succulent, elongated banana-shaped leaves measuring about 2–3 cm. Do not confuse this species with the Senecio rowleyanus whose leaves are perfectly round! This plant grows quickly, particularly in spring and autumn. It produces small, pom-pom-like yellow flowers typically in late winter or early spring. Summer marks its dormant period when it requires very little watering.
Indoors, it prefers temperatures between 15 and 25°C and tolerates dry air. Water moderately, allowing the soil to dry out between waterings.

Caution: this plant is toxic if ingested, so keep it out of reach of children and pets.

The Senecio herreianus 'Purple Flush' thrives in bright rooms such as a living room, kitchen, or a sunlit conservatory. In a hanging basket or placed on a high shelf, its trailing stems will create an elegant cascading effect perfect for a bohemian or minimalist décor. This plant fits well in a Scandinavian-style setting, paired with a white ceramic pot, or in an industrial look with aged metal containers. Pair it, for example, with a Hoya linearis or a Rhipsalis baccifera.

Location

Living room, kitchen, office, conservatory and other well-lit rooms with a stable temperature will make the Senecio Purple Flush thrive. Avoid overwatering and cold draughts. It is often used in hanging displays, as this presentation highlights its elegance, but makes the young plant more delicate: its stems then become more brittle.

Maintenance and care

Water moderately, allowing the compost to dry out between waterings. In summer, reduce watering to once a month.

Potting advice, substrates and fertilisers

Repot preferably in early spring, every 2 to 3 years, or when the plant becomes too large for its pot.
Use a mix of succulent compost with draining elements such as coarse sand or perlite. Ensure the pot has drainage holes.
Apply a liquid fertiliser specially formulated for succulent plants (low in nitrogen, for example NPK 2-7-7), to be applied once a month during the growth period.

Houseplant care

The Senecio herreianus is low-maintenance. Remove dead or dried leaves to maintain its attractive appearance.
Regular pruning is not necessary. However, to maintain a compact shape and encourage branching, you can pinch back the stem tips in spring. The cuttings obtained can be replanted to thicken the young plant.

Disease and pest advice

The Senecio Purple Flush is a robust young plant that remains free from notable parasitic issues. In case of mealybug infestation, gently clean the affected areas with a cotton bud soaked in 70% alcohol. Also ensure the substrate is well-draining to avoid excess moisture.
