Description

Stenocereus griseus cactus, also known as the "Mayo pitaya", is a large species with a columnar habit, which can be accommodated in a very bright interior, preferably with direct sunlight. Native to the arid regions of Venezuela and naturalised in Mexico, it typically consists of one or several trunks from which small, branching stems emerge at the base, forming a distinctive V-shape. When grown in a pot, its growth will be modest, but it will retain its characteristic silhouette.

Belonging to the Cactaceae family, Stenocereus griseus is also known as Cereus griseus, Lemaireocereus griseus, Neolemaireocereus griseus, Ritterocereus griseus. It originates from the coastal regions of Venezuela, the Guajira Peninsula in Colombia, and certain areas of Mexico, particularly the states of Oaxaca and Veracruz. In its natural habitat, it grows in tropical forests and xerophilous scrublands. Although specific data on its indoor height is limited, it is reasonable to expect Stenocereus griseus to reach between 1.5 and 3 metres in height when grown in a pot, depending on the care provided. This cactus has a tree-like structure with a well-defined trunk and erect, green to slightly glaucous stems, measuring between 9 and 12 cm in diameter. The stems are segmented into 6 to 10 pronounced ribs, adorned with areoles bearing 1 to 3 central thorns, the longest of which can reach 4 cm, and 6 to 11 radial thorns measuring 6 to 10 mm in length. The nocturnal flowering produces funnel-shaped, white flowers, which open at night and remain open until midday the following day. The flowers measure approximately 10 cm in length and are followed by spherical to oblong fruits, ranging in colour from yellowish-green to deep purplish-red, reaching up to 5 cm in diameter. These fruits, locally called "pitayas", are edible and prized for their sweet red pulp. They should not be confused with "dragon fruits", produced by Hylocereus undatus. Flowering is unpredictable on an indoor plant and occurs on a mature specimen under optimal growing conditions.

This Venezuelan candle cactus can be paired with other columnar cacti such as Pachycereus pringlei or Carnegiea gigantea, or with low-growing succulents like Echeveria or Sedum, adding a diversity of forms and textures to your plant collection.

Location

Indoors, the Stenocereus griseus prefers a position in full sun, ideally near a south-facing window, receiving several hours of direct light per day, or outdoors during the warmer season. In winter, if possible, place it in a room at 10-15°C to encourage flowering. The Stenocereus griseus tolerates high temperatures but should be protected from temperatures below 7°C.

Maintenance and care

Water moderately, allowing the compost to dry out completely between waterings. In winter, reduce watering to once a month at most. A terracotta pot with drainage holes will ensure optimal drainage.

Potting advice, substrates and fertilisers

Repot preferably in early spring, every 2 to 3 years, or when the young plant becomes too large for its pot.
Use a succulent compost mix with well-draining elements such as coarse sand or perlite. Ensure the pot has drainage holes.
Apply a liquid fertiliser specially formulated for succulent plants (low in nitrogen, for example NPK 2-7-7), once a month during the growth period, in spring and summer.

Disease and pest advice

In case of a mealybug infestation, gently clean the affected areas with a cotton bud soaked in 70% alcohol. Also ensure the growing medium is well-draining to avoid excess moisture.
