Description

Euphorbia lactea 'Cristata' is a crested form of the species. It is a succulent plant with a fascinating habit, whose appearance resembles a crinkled fan. This mutation of Euphorbia lactea forms a sinuate, flattened crest reminiscent of coral. Its foliage, with a white-marbled green hue, can sometimes take on pink or purple tones depending on exposure and growing conditions. Highly prized as an indoor plant, it grows slowly and requires minimal care.

The crested euphorbia 'Cristata' belongs to the Euphorbiaceae family and originates from a mutation of Euphorbia lactea, a species native to India and Sri Lanka. This crested form is obtained through selection and propagation in nurseries, where it is often grafted onto a more vigorous rootstock, such as Euphorbia canariensis, to promote its growth. Its habit is compact, with flattened, serrated stems that develop into wide undulations. The surface of the crest is often marbled with light green and white, sometimes edged with pink or purple hues, particularly pronounced under strong light. Unlike cacti, it does not have prickles but secretes a toxic and irritating white sap, characteristic of the Euphorbia genus. Its flowering is rare and subtle in indoor cultivation, manifesting as small yellow inflorescences on the crest. This potted euphorbia reaches about 35 cm in all directions.

Euphorbia lactea 'Cristata' requires a very bright environment, ideally near a south-facing window with a few hours of direct sunlight. It prefers temperatures between 18 and 25 °C and should be kept above 10 °C in winter. A well-draining substrate is essential: a mix of cactus soil, coarse sand, and perlite reduces the risk of root rot. Watering should be moderate, allowing the substrate to dry completely between waterings. In winter, the plant enters dormancy and requires only occasional watering, but in summer, avoid letting the substrate dry out completely.

The unique Euphorbia lactea 'Cristata' makes a striking statement in a living room, office, or bright conservatory. A terracotta pot will highlight its unusual forms. To enhance its personality, place it alongside compact succulent plants like Echeveria or Graptopetalum, or near trailing plants like Senecio rowleyanus. It is often grown alone as a focal point in a stylish pot to decorate a modern or minimalist interior.

Maintenance and care

Water moderately, allowing the compost to dry out between waterings. In winter, reduce watering to once a month. In summer, do not let the compost dry out completely.

Potting advice, substrates and fertilisers

Repot preferably in early spring, every 2 to 3 years, or when the young plant becomes too large for its pot.
Use a succulent compost mix with well-draining elements such as coarse sand or perlite. Ensure the pot has drainage holes.
Apply a liquid fertiliser specially formulated for succulent plants (low in nitrogen, for example NPK 2-7-7) once a month during the growth period in spring and summer.

Disease and pest advice

In case of a mealybug infestation, gently clean the affected areas with a cotton bud soaked in 70% alcohol. The roots are sensitive to excess water.
