Description

Mammillaria muehlenpfordtii is a small, globular cactus prized for its compact appearance and delicate thorns. Native to Mexico, it stands out for its conical tubercles covered in white wool and its fine, rigid thorns, usually numbering four, ranging in colour from yellow to brown and measuring between 2 and 40 mm in length. Under optimal conditions, it can be appreciated for its summer flowering, producing small carmine flowers arranged in a crown around the apex of the cactus.

Mammillaria muehlenpfordtii belongs to the Cactaceae family and is endemic to certain mountainous regions of Mexico, particularly the states of Guanajuato, Querétaro, and San Luis Potosí. In its natural habitat, this cactus remains relatively small, reaching about 15 to 20 cm in height and 15 cm in diameter. Its body consists of conical tubercles covered in white wool, and it features fine, rigid thorns that can vary between 1 and 4 cm in length. Its flowering occurs mainly in spring and summer, producing red or pink flowers in a crown around the apex of the plant, though this is harder to achieve indoors. This species may sometimes divide dichotomously (i.e., branch from the apex) as it grows, allowing it to form multiple heads. Mammillaria muehlenpfordtii is not toxic to humans or animals, but its thorns can cause injury if handled carelessly.

With its rounded habit and small, colourful flowers, Mammillaria muehlenpfordtii fits well in an office or south-facing living room. It pairs well with other compact cacti, such as Mammillaria bocasana or Mammillaria gracilis, as well as small succulents like Echeveria elegans or Sedum morganianum. It makes a lovely addition to any cactus garden or potted plant arrangement.

Location

The Mammillaria muehlenpfordtii requires bright light with direct sunlight behind a window. It can be placed outdoors during the warmer months and can tolerate high temperatures, between 20 and 30°C, but must be protected from temperatures below 5°C. The ambient humidity can be low. Rotate the pot regularly so that all sides of the cactus receive ample light. Given the presence of spines, avoid placing it near walkways or in areas frequented by young children or pets. In winter, a rest period is necessary, which involves reducing watering.

Maintenance and care

Water moderately, allowing the compost to dry out between waterings. In winter, reduce watering to once a month, or even less if the young plant is in a cool room (<15°C).

Potting advice, substrates and fertilisers

Repot preferably at the beginning of spring, every 2 to 3 years, or when the plant becomes too large for its pot. It doesn't mind being slightly cramped; in fact, it prefers it.
Use a succulent compost mix with well-draining elements such as coarse sand or perlite. Ensure the pot has drainage holes.
Apply a liquid fertiliser specially formulated for succulent plants (low in nitrogen, for example NPK 2-7-7), to be applied once a month during the growth period.

Houseplant care

No pruning is necessary. If a stem happens to break, let it dry for 15 days, then take a cutting by planting it in a very well-draining substrate.

Disease and pest advice

In case of a mealybug infestation, gently clean the affected areas with a cotton bud soaked in 70% alcohol. Also ensure the growing medium is well-draining to avoid excess moisture.
