Description

Echeveria agavoides, commonly known as "agave-leaved echeveria", is a popular succulent plant that is easy to care for and forms lovely compact rosettes. Originating from rocky areas in Mexico, this plant is drought-resistant but not very hardy. Its compact size and exotic appearance make it perfect for decorating small Mediterranean dry rockeries or terrace containers.

Belonging to the Crassulaceae family, Echeveria agavoides is native to the arid regions of Mexico, particularly in the states of San Luis, Potosí, Hidalgo, Guanajuato, and Durango. It naturally grows on rocky, poor, well-drained soils in sunny locations. This succulent forms a compact rosette measuring 7 to 15 cm in diameter and 8 to 12 cm in height. Its fleshy, triangular, pointed leaves are bright green and may show reddish tips under strong light. In spring or summer depending on the climate, it produces flower stalks that can reach 50 cm in height, adorned with bell-shaped flowers in pink, orange, or red hues with dark yellow tips. Echeveria agavoides is generally considered not very hardy, tolerating minimum temperatures around -4°C to -6°C, provided the soil remains dry.

Echeveria agavoides fits perfectly in container compositions, rockeries, or dry gardens in mild climates. To create harmonious scenes, consider combining it with plants with similar requirements, such as Sedum spectabile 'Carl', Aeonium arboreum 'Garnet', Graptopetalum paraguayense, and Crassula ovata 'Minor'. These combinations will highlight the diversity of shapes and shades while ensuring aesthetic and cultural coherence.

Maintenance and care

During the growth period (spring/summer), water only when the substrate is dry. In winter, reduce to monthly watering or less. Do not mist, as moisture can damage its leaves.

Potting advice, substrates and fertilisers

Repot every 2 to 3 years, preferably in spring when growth resumes. Choose a pot slightly larger than the previous one.
Prepare a well-draining substrate by mixing cactus compost with drainage materials such as coarse sand, perlite or pumice. Adding clay pebbles to the bottom of the pot improves drainage.
Use a liquid fertiliser for cacti, low in nitrogen (NPK 5-10-5), in spring and summer, at a rate of once a month, diluted to half the recommended dose.

Houseplant care

Divide the clumps every 2 or 3 years and make sure to remove the dead leaves regularly to prevent rotting at the centre of the clumps.

Disease and pest advice

This young plant is robust, but poor watering management or exposure to excessive humidity can make it vulnerable to fungal infections and parasitic attacks.
