Description

Echeveria agavoides, commonly known as "agave-leaved echeveria", is a popular succulent plant that is easy to care for and forms lovely compact rosettes. Originating from rocky areas in Mexico, this plant is drought-resistant but not very hardy. Its compact size and exotic appearance make it perfect for decorating small Mediterranean dry rockeries or terrace containers.

Belonging to the Crassulaceae family, Echeveria agavoides is native to the arid regions of Mexico, particularly in the states of San Luis, Potosí, Hidalgo, Guanajuato, and Durango. It naturally grows on rocky, poor, well-drained soils in sunny locations. This succulent forms a compact rosette measuring 7 to 15 cm in diameter and 8 to 12 cm in height. Its fleshy, triangular, pointed leaves are bright green and may show reddish tips under strong light. In spring or summer depending on the climate, it produces flower stalks that can reach 50 cm in height, adorned with bell-shaped flowers in pink, orange, or red hues with dark yellow tips. Echeveria agavoides is generally considered not very hardy, tolerating minimum temperatures around -4°C to -6°C, provided the soil remains dry.

Echeveria agavoides fits perfectly in container compositions, rockeries, or dry gardens in mild climates. To create harmonious scenes, consider combining it with plants with similar requirements, such as Sedum spectabile 'Carl', Aeonium arboreum 'Garnet', Graptopetalum paraguayense, and Crassula ovata 'Minor'. These combinations will highlight the diversity of shapes and shades while ensuring aesthetic and cultural coherence.

Planting and care

Plant Echeveria agavoides in a pot in April or in the ground in May (in the mildest regions). It is best planted in full sun or in very bright partial shade in well-drained, light, sandy to rocky, fairly dry soil. This succulent does not tolerate frosts below -3°C well, but can withstand cold better if the substrate remains perfectly dry in winter. Indoors, avoid overly dry conditions and direct sunlight, especially behind a glass window. Use a very heavy pot as the plant significantly increases in weight with age. Use a growing medium for succulent plants that is draining and not too poor: a mix of leaf mold, pumice, and peat or coconut fibre. Regular, but moderate watering is necessary throughout the growing season, especially during summer when the substrate should be allowed to dry out completely between waterings.
