Description
Aloe rauhii 'Cleopatra' or Snowflake aloe is a highly sought-after species for its numerous white markings covering its rough, grey-green leaves. It is a small perennial with a spreading habit. It forms tight rosettes of thick, succulent, triangular leaves with tiny white teeth that turn orange-purple in the sun. It bears unique winter flowering in spikes of bright orange tubular flowers. Not tolerant to frost, it should be grown in a pot and stored indoors during winter or used to create colourful masses in rockeries, but only in mild climates, in well-drained, even limestone soil.
Aloe rauhii 'Cleopatra' is a botanical species in the Asphodelaceae family, native to Madagascar. It is a compact, small succulent perennial with a rosette habit that is wider than it is tall, reaching approximately 20 cm (8in) in height and 30 cm (12in) in width. It grows relatively quickly, reaching its adult size in 5-6 years. It forms a short stem, not exceeding 10 cm (4in) in height with age, concealed by the leaves. The leaves are triangular, thick, fleshy, and upright. Their main colour ranges from grey-green to white depending on the intensity of the white spotting. They have white spines along the edges that turn brown under direct sunlight. From January to April, depending on the climate and the year, a non-branched flower stalk of 40 cm (16in) emerges from the centre of mature rosettes, bearing pendulous bright orange tubular flowers.
Aloe x rauhii 'Cleopatra' thrives when potted to decorate a terrace or balcony, taking care to remove rosettes that have become too numerous for the available space. It also flourishes in the ground in Mediterranean climates or on protected Atlantic coastlines, in a bed, rockery, or well-drained slope. It is hardy to approximately 0°C (32°F) in dry soil. Plant this aloe in sloping or rocky, well-drained terrain, or even in dry stone walls. Elsewhere, it can be planted in a wider than tall pot to fully enjoy its unique charm. It can, for example, be paired with small agaves. You can plant frugal ground covers such as Evening Primroses, Osteospermums, Felicia, and Delosperma around their base to fill the space with their flowering and evergreen foliage, hiding any gaps left by dead plants.

Planting and care
Like all "succulent" plants, aloes thrive in full sun and a very well-drained, even poor and dry soil. The Aloe rauhii 'Cleopatra' will thrive in a highly mineral soil, composed of a good amount of coarse sand mixed with garden soil and a little decomposed leaf compost: A light, non-clayey soil, low in organic matter, and highly permeable. It tolerates long, hot, and dry summers, but also flourishes in mild, more rainy oceanic regions. However, its hardiness in winter depends a lot on soil dryness. It does not tolerate freezing at all. When this aloe is grown in a pot, it should be stored in a very bright, minimally or unheated room during the winter and barely watered.

Hardiness is the lowest winter temperature a plant can endure without suffering serious damage or even dying. However, hardiness is affected by location (a sheltered area, such as a patio), protection (winter cover) and soil type (hardiness is improved by well-drained soil).
The flowering period indicated on our website applies to countries and regions located in USDA zone 8 (France, the United Kingdom, Ireland, the Netherlands, etc.)
It will vary according to where you live:- In zones 9 to 10 (Italy, Spain, Greece, etc.), flowering will occur about 2 to 4 weeks earlier.
- In zones 6 to 7 (Germany, Poland, Slovenia, and lower mountainous regions), flowering will be delayed by 2 to 3 weeks.
- In zone 5 (Central Europe, Scandinavia), blooming will be delayed by 3 to 5 weeks.
In temperate climates, pruning of spring-flowering shrubs (forsythia, spireas, etc.) should be done just after flowering.
Pruning of summer-flowering shrubs (Indian Lilac, Perovskia, etc.) can be done in winter or spring.
In cold regions as well as with frost-sensitive plants, avoid pruning too early when severe frosts may still occur.
The planting period indicated on our website applies to countries and regions located in USDA zone 8 (France, United Kingdom, Ireland, Netherlands).
It will vary according to where you live:
- In Mediterranean zones (Marseille, Madrid, Milan, etc.), autumn and winter are the best planting periods.
- In continental zones (Strasbourg, Munich, Vienna, etc.), delay planting by 2 to 3 weeks in spring and bring it forward by 2 to 4 weeks in autumn.
- In mountainous regions (the Alps, Pyrenees, Carpathians, etc.), it is best to plant in late spring (May-June) or late summer (August-September).
The harvesting period indicated on our website applies to countries and regions in USDA zone 8 (France, England, Ireland, the Netherlands).
In colder areas (Scandinavia, Poland, Austria...) fruit and vegetable harvests are likely to be delayed by 3-4 weeks.
In warmer areas (Italy, Spain, Greece, etc.), harvesting will probably take place earlier, depending on weather conditions.
The sowing periods indicated on our website apply to countries and regions within USDA Zone 8 (France, UK, Ireland, Netherlands).
In colder areas (Scandinavia, Poland, Austria...), delay any outdoor sowing by 3-4 weeks, or sow under glass.
In warmer climes (Italy, Spain, Greece, etc.), bring outdoor sowing forward by a few weeks.
