Description

Camellia sasanqua Hinode-Gumo grows quite rapidly in clumps. Its upright habit makes it more graceful than the Camellia japonica. This less common 'sasanqua' (autumn) variety blooms from November to February on new shoots or those from the previous year. These large flowers, 10 cm (4 in) in diameter, are single and fragrant. They are a beautiful white with light pink edges. The centre of the flower is bright yellow.

The wide elliptical leaves of the Camellia are dark green on the upper side, lighter on the underside. They are evergreen and measure 5 to 8 cm (2 to 3 in) long. The plant can reach a height of 2 to 3 m (6 to 10 ft) in full bloom. It is very hardy (-10°C (14 °F)) and is native to Japan and China.

This bush can be placed anywhere. It tends to be found in older-style gardens, although its beauty deserves a place in all layouts. It can be used in ericaceous beds or in hedges, as well as to stand alone on lawns and terraces. It is magnificent ground cover for shaded areas or steep slopes. Plant it near the house to enjoy its autumn flowering. It can also be grown in a minimum 70 cm (28 in) diameter pot. In colder regions you can bring it indoors during the flowering period. The name Hinode-Gumo means "cloud of the rising sun" in Japanese.

Planting and care

Camellia sasanqua should be placed in a fairly shaded area, sheltered from cold and drying winds. You can also grow it in full sun, but the roots must remain cool. Plant in a cool, humus-rich, acidic and well-drained soil. Do not plant the bush too deeply; the top of the root ball should be covered with 3 cm (1.2 in) of soil. In winter cover with a 5 to 7 cm (2 to 3 in) thick mulch composed of leaf compost and crushed bark. Beware of late frosts that can damage flowers and buds. During dry periods, water the bush to prevent the dropping of flower buds. Camellia sasanqua can be susceptible to root rot, leaf spots, and viruses. It can be attacked by aphids and scale insects that cause sooty mould, as well as by weevils.
