Description

The Peperomia obtusifolia Red Canyon®  or Baby Rubber Plant is a compact variety with dark red stems, harmonising beautifully with its very dark green foliage. Not particularly demanding in terms of growing conditions, it will thrive in bright light, preferably without direct sunlight, and is fairly tolerant of the ambient humidity found in our homes.

Belonging to the Piperaceae family, the Peperomia obtusifolia Red Canyon® is a cultivar derived from the Peperomia obtusifolia species commonly known as Baby Rubber Plant, native to Florida and tropical America and widely found in humid tropical regions. It grows on small rocks or as epiphytes on wood, for example. Its glossy, succulent leaves are elliptical, borne on thick, upright stems of a lovely deep red. These fleshy leaves are designed to store water, helping the plant to withstand occasional droughts. The Red Canyon has a bushy, compact habit and does not typically exceed 30 to 40 cm in height with a similar spread. Although primarily grown for its foliage, it may produce small, inconspicuous greenish-white flowers on slender spikes.
The name 'Peperomia' is derived from the Greek words 'peperi' (pepper) and 'homoios' (resembling). This etymology highlights the plant's connection to the Piperaceae family, which also includes black pepper (Piper nigrum).

Create a charming display by placing the Peperomia Red Canyon on a piece of furniture or within a plant collection, alongside a Scindapsus pictus with its trailing habit and silvery foliage. This peperomia thrives in standard household humidity without needing misting; allow the compost to dry out in-between waterings.

Maintenance and care

Water when the substrate is dry; empty the saucer; in winter, reduce the watering frequency.

Potting advice, substrates and fertilisers

Repot every 2 to 3 years, in spring.
Use a well-draining and aerated mix, with perlite or even a cactus mix. This helps prevent excess moisture from settling around the roots and reduces the risk of root rot. Add a drainage layer at the bottom of the pot to avoid water stagnation.
Apply a balanced liquid fertiliser (NPK 10-10-10) monthly during the growth period (spring and summer).

Houseplant care

Overwatering or poor drainage is indicated by soft or yellow leaves.
Pruning is not necessary, but you can thicken the plant by pinching out it stems.

Disease and pest advice

In case of a mealybug infestation, clean the leaves with a cloth soaked in soapy water and isolate the plant until the parasitic pests disappear. If red spider mites attack, shower the plant several times.
