Description

The Peperomia 'Colombiana' is a dark-leaved variety, with ambiguous tones full of reflections. It develops small, heart-shaped, very dark green, glossy leaves with chocolate or bronze hues and a metallic sheen. The leaves are highlighted by a light metallic grey spot in their centre. Their underside is a deep burgundy red. The plant has a bushy habit and remains quite compact. It thrives in medium light away from windows, without direct sunlight.

Belonging to the Piperaceae family, the Peperomia genus includes nearly 1700 species, often with fleshy foliage, native mainly to Central and South America, but also to Asia. Some grow naturally as far as Florida. These tropical plants develop in woodland undergrowth in dappled light and humid atmospheres, sometimes as epiphytes or among rocks. Their small, discreet spike-like flowers add to the plant's charm. The Peperomia metallica Colombiana is a variant of the metallica species (syn. Peperomia marmorata, Peperomia argyrea) botanically named Peperomia metallica var. colombiana. The species originates from South America, specifically Colombia. It forms a small plant about 30 cm tall and 30 cm wide with a bushy, upright habit. The leaves are cordate, glossy, with a superb dark colour that reflects their growth in woodland undergrowth in their natural habitat.
The name 'Peperomia' is derived from the Greek words 'peperi' (pepper) and 'homoios' (resembling). This etymology highlights the plant's connection to the Piperaceae family which also includes black pepper (Piper nigrum).

The Peperomia Colombiana thrives in very well-draining substrate allowed to dry out between waterings. Standard indoor humidity is sufficient, though it will benefit from higher humidity levels. It can thus be grown in a bathroom or terrarium, but misting should be avoided. Place it at eye level to admire its lovely small foliage. Pair it in a terrarium with small Calatheas or Fittonias.

Location

Its compact size makes it suitable for all rooms in the flat or house, especially as it is tolerant of varying light levels and ambient humidity. Avoid draughts, proximity to radiators and direct sunlight which can scorch the leaves. As the Peperomia colombiana appreciates higher ambient humidity than some of its relatives, it will naturally thrive in a bathroom or its dark foliage will create lovely contrasts in a terrarium.

Maintenance and care

Water once a week when the substrate is dry. Do not allow water to stagnate in the saucer. In winter, reduce the watering frequency.

Potting advice, substrates and fertilisers

Repot every 2 to 3 years, in spring
Use a well-draining and aerated mixture, preferably based on turf. This helps prevent excess moisture from settling around the roots and reduces the risk of root rot. Provide a drainage layer at the bottom of the pot to avoid water stagnation.
Apply a balanced liquid fertiliser (NPK 10-10-10) monthly during the growth period (spring and summer).

Houseplant care

Remove damaged leaves. Overwatering or poor drainage results in soft or yellow leaves.
Pruning is not necessary, but you can make the plant bushier by pinching out its shoots.

Disease and pest advice

In case of a mealybug infestation, clean the leaves with a cloth soaked in soapy water and isolate the plant until the parasitic pests disappear. If red spider mites attack, shower the plant several times.
