Description

The Peperomia obtusifolia 'Bicolor' is a variegated succulent foliage cultivar comprising thick, elliptical, glossy leaves borne on sturdy stems. Its broader and more pronounced cream variegation than that of the 'USA' cultivar is highlighted by a delicate pink border that outlines the lamina. A small, bushy, upright plant, it is undemanding and prefers bright, indirect light but also adapts to medium light levels.

Belonging to the Piperaceae family, the Peperomia genus includes nearly 1,700 species, often with fleshy foliage, native primarily to Central and South America but also to Asia. Some grow naturally as far north as Florida. These tropical plants thrive in woodland understories, in dappled light and humid conditions, sometimes as epiphytes or among rocks. Their small, discreet spike-like flowers add to the plant's charm. The Peperomia obtusifolia 'Bicolor' is an ornamental cultivar derived from the Peperomia obtusifolia or blunt-leaved peperomia species native from Florida to tropical America and widespread in humid tropical regions. It develops dark green, succulent, glossy leaves on thick, upright stems with a compact and robust habit. These fleshy leaves are designed to store water, helping the plant withstand occasional droughts. It typically grows no taller than 30 to 40 cm with a similar spread. Though mainly grown for its foliage, it may produce small, inconspicuous greenish-white flowers on slender spikes. The 'Bicolor' differs from the species in its cream-edged leaves with pink margins.
The name 'Peperomia' derives from the Greek words 'peperi' (pepper) and 'homoios' (resembling). This etymology highlights the plant's connection to the Piperaceae family which also includes black pepper (Piper nigrum).

Place Peperomia obtusifolia 'Bicolor' on a shelf or within a plant collection alongside species with similar requirements such as succulent Tradescantias or Scindapsus. This peperomia thrives in standard household humidity without misting, allowing the soil to dry out between waterings.

Maintenance and care

Water once a week when the substrate is dry. Do not allow water to stagnate in the saucer. In winter, reduce the watering frequency.

Potting advice, substrates and fertilisers

Repot every 2 to 3 years, in spring
A mix designed for succulents or a standard potting mix with added perlite works perfectly. This helps prevent excess moisture from settling around the roots and reduces the risk of root rot. Ensure a drainage layer at the bottom of the pot to avoid water stagnation.
Apply a balanced liquid fertiliser (NPK 10-10-10) monthly during the growth period (spring and summer).

Houseplant care

Potential issues arise from overwatering or poor drainage (soft or yellow leaves).
Pruning is not necessary, but you can make the plant bushier by pinching out some of its stems.

Disease and pest advice

In case of mealybug infestation, clean the leaves with a cloth soaked in soapy water and isolate the plant until the parasitic pests disappear. If red spider mites attack, shower the plant several times.
