Description

The Peperomia Fire Sparks® is an astonishing variety with leaves resembling pods or small tacos, in a bright green colour. This succulent peperomia has some drought tolerance but it is somewhat sensitive to root rot if watered too frequently. Provide it with bright light, avoiding direct sunlight. Lower light levels will slow its growth.

Belonging to the Piperaceae family, the Peperomia genus includes nearly 1,700 species, often with fleshy foliage, primarily native to Central and South America, as well as Asia. Some grow naturally as far as Florida. These tropical plants thrive in undergrowth, in dappled light and humid conditions, sometimes as epiphytes or among rocks. The Peperomia dolabriformis Fire Sparks is an ornamental cultivar derived from the Peperomia dolabriformis species or Prayer Peperomia, native to Peru. The fleshy leaves are designed to store water, helping the plant withstand occasional droughts. The Fire Sparks which forms a small, upright, bushy clump typically does not exceed 30 to 40 cm in height with a similar spread. In this variety, the leaves which are almost folded in on themselves give the plant a highly graphic appearance. Perched on stiff stems, they could almost evoke miniature palm trees. Each thick and succulent leaf allows light to penetrate through its slightly translucent surface.
The name 'Peperomia' is derived from the Greek words 'peperi' (pepper) and 'homoios' (resembling). This etymology highlights the plant's connection to the Piperaceae family, which also includes black pepper (Piper nigrum).

The astonishing, vibrant tubular foliage of the Peperomia Fire Sparks pairs beautifully with the black foliage of the Zamioculcas zamiifolia 'Raven' for a striking contrast. Place it on a shelf or sideboard among a plant collection, perhaps alongside a blue-leaved Phlebodium aureum. This peperomia thrives in standard household humidity without needing misting—just allow the growing medium to dry out between waterings.

Maintenance and care

Water when the substrate is dry. Do not allow water to stagnate in the saucer; in winter, reduce the watering frequency.

Potting advice, substrates and fertilisers

Repot every 2 to 3 years, in spring
Use a well-draining and aerated mix, such as cactus compost. This helps prevent excess moisture from settling around the roots and reduces the risk of root rot. Provide a drainage layer at the bottom of the pot to avoid water stagnation.
Apply a balanced liquid fertiliser (NPK 10-10-10) monthly during the growth period (spring and summer).

Houseplant care

Potential issues arise from overwatering or poor drainage, indicated by soft or yellowing leaves.
Pruning is not necessary, but pinching out the stems can help promote a denser plant.

Disease and pest advice

In case of a mealybug infestation, clean the leaves with a cloth soaked in soapy water and isolate the plant until the parasitic pests disappear. If red spider mites attack, shower the plant several times.
