Description

The Peperomia rotundifolia or Round-leaved Peperomia is a little gem for houseplant enthusiasts. Adorned with small fleshy leaves  rounded in a vibrant green, its trailing stems bring a touch of freshness and elegance to your décor. Easy to care for, it thrives in any bright room without direct sunlight and only requires moderate watering. Perfect in a hanging basket or on a wall shelf, it complements many interior design styles.

The Peperomia rotundifolia belongs to the Piperaceae family. The Round-leaved Peperomia is particularly widespread in countries such as Brazil, Ecuador, and Colombia, where it grows in humid, shaded undergrowth. This epiphytic plant is characterised by its trailing habit with slender, flexible stems that can reach up to 60 cm in length. Its small leaves about 1 cm in diameter, are fleshy, round, and bright green, offering a smooth and glossy texture. The growth of the Round-leaved Peperomia is relatively slow and its height does not exceed 10 to 15 cm indoors. Its discreet flowering, mainly during the summer months, takes the form of tiny greenish flowers arranged in thread-like spikes.
The Peperomia genus includes over 1,000 species, primarily native to tropical and subtropical regions of Central and South America. The name 'Peperomia' derives from the Greek 'peperi' (pepper) and 'homoios' (resembling), referencing its relation to the pepper plant.

Peperomia rotundifolia will thrive in a bright living room, a well-lit bedroom, or even an office. It looks stunning in a hanging basket, on a shelf, or a windowsill with soft light. This variety pairs beautifully with trailing houseplants featuring fine, delicate foliage, such as a Ceropegia woodii (String of Hearts) and Hoya linearis.

Location

Indoors, Peperomia rotundifolia prefers bright, indirect light, avoiding direct sunlight which could scorch its delicate leaves. The young plant also tolerates lower light conditions, making it adaptable to various locations around the home. Moderate to high ambient humidity is ideal. The optimal temperature range is between 18 and 24°C, avoiding cold draughts and sudden temperature fluctuations. Do not place it near a radiator.

Maintenance and care

Water when the substrate is dry on the top few centimetres of the pot; empty the saucer; in winter, reduce the watering frequency. Peperomia rotundifolia prefers to be left alone: not too much watering, no misting. It is sensitive to root rot if overwatered, more so than to occasional drought.

Potting advice, substrates and fertilisers

Repot every 2 to 3 years, in spring.
Use a well-draining and aerated mixture, preferably based on turf. This helps prevent excess moisture from settling around the roots and reduces the risk of root rot. Provide a drainage layer at the bottom of the pot to avoid water stagnation.
Apply a balanced liquid fertiliser (NPK 10-10-10) monthly during the growth period (spring and summer).

Houseplant care

The Peperomia rotundifolia requires little maintenance. Occasionally clean its small leaves with a spray of room-temperature water to remove dust and maintain their shine. Remove any damaged leaves.
Light pruning in early spring can encourage denser and more harmonious growth. Pinch out the stem tips to stimulate branching and achieve a bushier plant.

Disease and pest advice

In case of a mealybug infestation, clean the leaves with a cloth soaked in soapy water and isolate the plant until the parasitic pests disappear.
