A selection of white Lilacs. Syringa vulgaris, or the common lilac, has produced some very beautiful white varieties, like the magnificent Lilac 'Madame Lemoine', but it's not the only one. All lilacs are deciduous bushes that generally bloom between April and June, with clusters of delicately scented single or double flowers. Among the common lilacs, which form true small trees of 3-4m (10-13ft), we can mention 'Comtesse d'Harcour' or 'Jeanne d'Arc', with their enormous double flowers. These are old varieties with prestigious names, vigorous and more or less suckering, created by Lemoine in the 19th century. For small gardens or container gardening, there are now other white lilacs, more "well-behaved" and of a more modest stature. For example, Syringa vulgaris 'Dentelle d'Anjou', a more compact version of 'Madame Lemoine' and especially less suckering. The dwarf lilac Syringa meyeri 'Flowerfesta White' reaches 1.25m (4ft) in all directions, this bush is very floriferous in April-May and it reblooms at the end of the season, with clusters of highly scented single flowers. And for lovers of rare species, the Syringa pinnatifolia lilac with pinnate leaves: less spectacular, but with a more "natural" appearance, this bush has foliage reminiscent of that of the rowan tree and produces light panicles of small tubular, scented flowers, barely tinged with lilac. Superb in a large flowering hedge, lilac flowers are naturally perfect for bouquets, especially with peonies and irises. Easy to grow in any well-drained soil, in almost all climates, the Lilac is an essential shrub in a flower garden.
