Description

Erysimum 'Winter Spirit' is a perennial wallflower with warm tones, which offers a taste of summer in early spring. Its early flowers bloom in a yellow ochre shade, with a rusty orange centre. They open for several months, from the end of winter to the beginning of summer, on a perennial, hardy undershrub that can withstand temperatures down to -7°C.

Most often native to limestone regions in southern Europe, central Asia, and North America, Erysimum, close relatives of wallflowers, belong to the brassicaceae family, just like rapeseed and mustard. These shrubs or short-lived perennials prefer well-drained soils, even poor and limestone, where they show more longevity.

The 'Winter Spirit' wallflower is a well-branched small bush, a little taller than wide, about 40-50 cm in height, with narrow, dark green, evergreen foliage in winter. It is ideal in a pot, grown as a biennial, for the spring decoration of your containers and planters, but will also thrive in the rock garden, or well-drained soil and in full sun, where it will live for 3 to 5 years. It flowers from March to June, or even early July when summer is late. The numerous buds give rise to large flowers, twice as wide as those of classic wallflowers, but with the same typical 4-petal shape of the crucifer family, gathered in beautiful spikes. A sweet scent of wallflower spreads in the air on sunny days, perfuming a whole area of the garden.

The 'Winter Spirit' wallflower is easy to grow in a pot where you can meet its water and fertiliser requirements, as it is a rather demanding plant. You can associate it according to your preferences with bulbs such as daffodils and jonquils, or opt for biennial flowers in pink, red, or orange among pansies, primroses, and other violas. Explore other combinations with early perennials such as arabis, iberis, aubrieta, and Moroccan daisies, as well as ornamental grasses with decorative foliage such as evergreen carex. These associations create attractive compositions for flowering containers on a terrace or balcony and also provide a quick solution to enhance a rock garden in a newly landscaped garden.

Note: Attention, our young plug plants are products reserved for experienced gardeners: upon receipt, repot them as soon as possible, in containers, planters, or directly in the ground.

Planting and care

The plug plants of Erysimum 'Winter Spirit' can be planted in pots and containers or directly in the ground in a finely prepared and enriched soil. Plant them if possible upon receipt, in September-October. If the planned location is not yet ready or if the conditions are not favourable for planting (heavy rain or dry soil), you can grow them on in pots for 4 to 6 weeks. At planting or shortly after, you must pinch the tip of the plant between your thumb and index finger to remove the terminal bud and stimulate branching. It is possible to repeat this operation until mid-October to obtain denser bushes.

In pots and containers, use well-draining soil for flowering plants (for example with a lot of bark or perlite), enriched with slow-release fertiliser. The top of the root ball should be level with the soil. Water generously at planting and in the following weeks, as plug plants can dry out quickly. However, be careful of excess water! Make sure to use containers with drainage holes and empty the saucer 10 minutes after watering. Remember to water even during winter if it doesn't rain or if the container is placed in a sheltered area. Do not water during freezing periods.

From 3 weeks after planting and until after flowering, apply a liquid fertiliser for flowering plants once or twice a week with the watering water, even in winter (as long as watering is necessary). The faded spikes can be cut to maintain a neat appearance, but it is not essential, as long as the plant does not lack water, the flowering will continue on its own. Once the flowering is over, potted plants can be replanted in the garden in full sun after being pruned back by about 5 cm.
