Description

Glechoma hederacea 'Variegata' or ground ivy is a perennial ground cover. This variety has green leaves variegated with cream white. In early spring small violet flowers adorn its evergreen foliage. It is ideal as ground cover or in a pot.

Glechoma hederacea is native to Europe. The cultivar 'Variegata' is the variegated foliage version of the plant. It is a creeping perennial, reaching 15 cm (5.9 in) tall and can cover 2m² on its own. During the months of March to April, elongated honey-producing flowers, light violet with lips bordered by violet, can be seen among the foliage. These flowers seem to come straight out of a watercolor painting! The furry evergreen leaves, heart-shaped with rounded dentate margins, are green marbled with cream white. They are the main attraction of this variety. The brown squared stems are characteristic of plants in the Lamiaceae family.

Easy to grow and very hardy it likes ordinary, light, fresh, humus-rich and moist soil. Its main requirement is fresh soil. It will thrive in all sites, in sun or shade.

Fast-growing, it can be used in flowerbeds as ground cover, in hanging baskets for a leafy cascade effect, and in deciduous woodlands. This plant will go well with hostas, comfrey or even hyacinths.

Ground ivy was once used in salads and beer. Multiple medicinal effects are attributed to ground ivy including astringent, expectorant, and tonic effects.

Please note that our young plants in mini-plugs are professional products intended for experienced gardeners: upon receipt, transplant and store them under shelter (veranda, greenhouse, frame) at a temperature above 14C° for a few weeks before planting outside once all risk of frost has passed.

Planting and care

Plant Glechoma hederacea 'Variegata' in any moist soil, in shade or partial shade. If planted in full sun make sure the substrate remains moist, especially in pots and hanging baskets. It likes humus-rich soils so don't hesitate to add potting mix and well-rotted compost when planting. After establishment ground ivy no longer requires attention.
