Description

Milas Corncockle, also known as Milas Field Cuckoo, is an annual plant, scientifically named Agrostemma githago. A weed species in cereal fields, similar to poppies and cornflowers, it is currently endangered. In summer, this plant produces large bright pink funnel-shaped flowers. Appreciated for its ornamental value, it is ideal for rustic flower beds and thrives easily in well-drained, fertile soils. The seeds of this 'Milas' variety naturally self-sow, ensuring faithful reproduction year after year. They are certified organic.

The Corncockle belongs to the Caryophyllaceae family. Native to Europe, temperate Asia, and North Africa, it has spread worldwide through wheat harvests. This herbaceous plant, often considered a weed in cereal crops due to the toxicity of its seeds, has nearly disappeared from fields due to herbicides and mechanical grain sorting. However, it remains one of the most beautiful wildflowers, distinguished by its slender, sparingly branched stems reaching up to 1 metre. The linear to lanceolate leaves and the 3 to 5 cm flowers are covered with a fine down. Flowering occurs from June to August, followed by capsule containing toxic black seeds.

The Milas corncockle is an excellent choice for natural-style gardens. It pairs well with plants like Love-in-a-Mist Nigella, Wild Cornflower Centaurea, or charming annual grass like Bunny Tails Lagurus ovatus. Its flowers can also be used in bouquets to decorate the home. Easy to grow, even in pots, this plant brings a rustic and nostalgic touch to any setting.

Although Corncockle may increase wheat yields under certain conditions, the toxicity of its seeds, due to the presence of saponin, has led to its gradual removal from crops. Today, this substance, although harmful in high doses, is sometimes used in herbal medicine for its anti-hemorrhagic, diuretic, and expectorant properties.

Planting and care

Sowing :

Sow Milas organic corncockle seeds from March to May directly in open ground or in a pot or seed tray, without covering the seeds (light is beneficial for their germination). Maintain at a temperature of 18 °C.

Transplant into open ground as soon as the young plants are manageable. Sowing can be done directly in place as soon as all risk of frost has passed. Sow thinly and thin out every 20 to 25 cm. Sowing spacing : 25 to 30 cm between plants. Recommended minimum sowing temperature : 18 °C to 20°C.

One can also sow at the end of summer in a not too cold region, in September, for flowering the following year, at 16°/21 °C.
Transplanting into a pot followed by planting in place at a distance of 30 cm between each young plant.

Cultivation :

Corncockle is an undemanding plant, which adapts to any ordinary, fertile, well-drained soil. It should be sown in place, in a sunny exposure. In poor and dry soil, it will be smaller, but it will still manage to flower abundantly.
