Description

Mexican Catchfly Jack Flash is a herbaceous perennial plant of the family Caryophyllaceae, which differs from other varieties by its red star-shaped blooms.

This variety is sometimes distributed under the synonym: Silene laciniata Starburst.

The light green lanceolate leaves are slender and delicate, measuring 2 to 4 cm long and 0.5 cm wide.  Foliage is dense. The numerous flower stems get tangled up and intertwine, forming a light, airy clump reaching a total height of 45-60 cm.

The solitary flowers are borne on slender aerial stems and are surprisingly shaped into bright red stars that are deeply cut into 20 points. The centre of the flower is yellow-orange and is outlined with a touch of white. Lavish stamens emerge from the centre and reinforce the star-like shape of the blooms. The flowers, which are 2 to 3 cm in diameter, are repeat bloom uninterruptedly from June to the end of August. Their unique shape is an immediate eye-catcher.

Silene laciniata Jack Flash is easy to grow and has no special requirements concerning the quality of the soil. Even if it prefers a sunny position, it can tolerate light shade. It is an original plant that is easy to introduce in the garden in the middle of a perennial bed or to grow in a pot on the terrace where it will undoubtedly be admired by all.

The first flowers appear quickly in the first year from seed.

Planting and care

Sow Mexican Catchfly Jack Flash from March to May in a seed tray. Use a good quality compost that you will sift on the surface to allow the seed to bind to the growing medium. Before sowing, lightly tamp down the soil with a small plank of wood. Broadcast sow your seeds. Cover the seeds with a fine sprinkling of topsoil or vermiculite, tamp down lightly and water generously with a fine spray. Place your tray in the light, without direct sunlight, at a temperature of 15°c to 20°c.

Seed emergence takes 14 to 21 days. As soon as the seedlings can be handled, transplant them into 7 cm pots. Keep the soil moist during growth, but not excessively so. Then, 15 days before planting them out in their final positions, start to acclimatize them gradually until a temperature of 15°c is reached.

End of May, beginning of June, the temperature in the garden will be warm enough to install your young plants. Choose a site with plenty of sunshine. Add a good shovelful of compost to each planting hole. Space your plants 30 cm apart.

Regularly remove faded flowers to keep plants tidy looking and encourage bloom renewal.
