Description

Harrisia tetracantha, also known as "Moonlight Cactus", is a tree-like cactus native to eastern Bolivia. Valued for its slender silhouette and spectacular nocturnal flowering, it can reach up to 3 metres in height in its natural habitat. Its blue-green to grey-green stems are adorned with long white thorns tipped with brown.

Belonging to the Cactaceae familyHarrisia tetracantha is primarily found in the Bolivian departments of Cochabamba, Chuquisaca, Potosí, Santa Cruz, and Tarija, where it grows in dry forests between 1200 and 2600 metres above sea level. The name "Harrisia" pays tribute to the American botanist William Harris. The species features cylindrical stems with eight rounded, tuberculate ribs. The central thorns, initially brownish, turn white to ashy grey over time, while the four to seven radial thorns are white with brown tips. Though large in the wild, this beautiful cactus will more likely reach 1 to 1.5 metres in height when grown in a conservatory. The flowering of Harrisia tetracantha indoors is rare, as this species typically requires specific conditions to bloom, including mature size and day-night temperature variations. However, with proper care and adequate light exposure, flowering can be encouraged. The ephemeral, pure white flowers measure between 18 and 22 cm long and bloom at night. They wilt by dawn, followed by globose red fruits containing small black seeds.

In a collection of succulents, Harrisia tetracantha pairs harmoniously with other xerophilous plants such as agaves, aloes, or opuntias. In pots, it can be combined with trailing succulents like sedums to create attractive arrangements.

Location

To grow Harrisia tetracantha indoors, it is essential to provide it with a very bright position, near a south-facing window. Although it can tolerate slight drops in temperature, it is best to keep it at temperatures above 10°C. It can be taken outside during the warmer months to benefit from direct sunlight. Turn the pot regularly so that all sides of the cactus receive ample light. Ambient humidity can be low. Given the presence of spines, avoid placing it near walkways or in areas frequented by young children or pets. Its slender habit makes it an interesting centrepiece, especially when contrasted with plants of more compact forms or different foliage.

Maintenance and care

Water moderately, allowing the compost to dry out between waterings. In winter, reduce watering to once a month.

Potting advice, substrates and fertilisers

Repot preferably in early spring, every 2 to 3 years, or when the young plant outgrows its pot.
Use a succulent compost mix with well-draining elements such as coarse sand or perlite. Ensure the pot has drainage holes.
Apply a liquid fertiliser specially formulated for succulent plants (low in nitrogen, for example NPK 2-7-7), to be applied once a month during the growth period.

Houseplant care

Maintenance is very minimal, simply keep an eye out for pests.
No pruning is necessary. If a stem happens to break, let the wound dry for 15 days, then take a cutting by placing it in a very well-draining substrate.

Disease and pest advice

In case of a mealybug infestation, gently clean the affected areas with a cotton bud soaked in 70% alcohol. Also ensure the growing medium is well-draining to avoid excess moisture.
