Description

Mammillaria ernestii var. rubrispina is a cactus adorned with reddish thorns and a beautiful pink-red flowering. It is a small cylindrical cactus, typically solitary, with intensely knobbly green epidermis and very thorny. In spring, it forms a crown of small flowers that remain decorative for several weeks. It tolerates the dry air of our interiors perfectly but must be protected from frost in winter.

Mammillaria ernestii var. rubrispina is a variety of cactus belonging to the Cactaceae family. It is sometimes considered a subspecies of Mammillaria backebergiana, named Mammillaria backebergiana subsp. ernestii. This plant is native to Mexico, where it grows in arid and rocky environments. Initially globular, this cactus forms columnar stems that can reach 20 to 30 cm in height and about 5 to 6 cm in diameter. The dark green stems are covered with conical tubercles arranged in a spiral, each tubercle topped with areoles bearing thorns. The central thorns, numbering 1 to 3, are straight, reddish to brown, and measure 7 to 8 mm long. The 8 to 12 radial thorns measure 8 to 10 mm long. Flowering occurs from April to June in the form of purplish-pink to reddish-purple, bell-shaped flowers, measuring 1.8 to 2 cm long and 1 to 1.3 cm in diameter, arranged in a crown around the upper part of the stem.
The Mammillaria genus is one of the largest in the Cactaceae family, comprising over 170 species. These cacti are primarily native to Mexico and Central America, where they colonise desert and semi-desert areas. Adapted to arid conditions, they are robust plants favoured by collectors. The name "Mammillaria" comes from the Latin "mamilla," meaning "small breast," in reference to the characteristic tuberculate small projections of the genus.

In a succulent collection, Mammillaria ernestii var. rubrispina blends well with other species of varied shapes and colours. It can be paired with columnar cacti such as Stenocereus thurberi (the Organ Pipe Cactus) or small prickly pears like Opuntia microdasys 'Caress'. Placed on a cactus tray or in a pretty terracotta pot, it adds an exotic and elegant touch to your living room or office.

Location

Indoors, the Mammillaria ernestii var. rubrispina requires intense light. Position it to receive at least 6 hours of direct sunlight per day. Ideally, place it behind a south-facing window in winter and move the plant outdoors once the risk of frost has passed. In winter, reduce watering as the cactus enters a period of dormancy. During the growth period, the ideal temperature ranges between 20°C and 27°C.

Maintenance and care

Water moderately, allowing the compost to dry out between waterings. In winter, reduce watering to once a month.

Potting advice, substrates and fertilisers

Repot preferably in early spring, every 2 to 3 years, or when the young plant becomes too large for its pot. It doesn't mind being slightly cramped; in fact, it prefers it.
Use a succulent compost mix with well-draining elements such as coarse sand or perlite. Ensure the pot has drainage holes.
Apply a liquid fertiliser specially formulated for succulent plants (low in nitrogen, for example NPK 2-7-7), to be applied once a month during the growth period.

Houseplant care

No pruning is required. After a few years, you can separate the offshoots to pot them individually if desired.

Disease and pest advice

This cactus is robust if its needs are met, but sensitive to frost and excess moisture. In case of mealybug infestation, gently clean the affected areas with a cotton bud soaked in 70% alcohol.
