Description

The Anthurium villenaorum is an exceptional houseplant known for its lush, velvety leaves. Native to the tropical forests of Peru, this plant, with its elegant upright habit, fits perfectly into contemporary or tropical decor, adding a touch of sophisticated greenery. Ideal for urban jungle enthusiasts, it thrives in bright but indirect light. A key tip: ensure consistent humidity and use a well-draining substrate to maintain its sumptuous foliage.

Belonging to the Araceae family, the Anthurium villenaorum is a tropical perennial with an upright habit, featuring leaves that create a graceful and structured silhouette. It develops long, broad, slightly velvety leaves in a deep green hue adorned with silver veins that catch the light. Indoors, in a pot, it reaches a height of 50 to 70 cm with a spread of 40 to 60 cm. Its growth is relatively slow. Its discreet flowers, characteristic of the Anthurium genus, take the form of a spathe and spadix, but it’s primarily its leaves that make it so charming.

Native to the humid forests of Peru, the Anthurium villenaorum thrives under a dense canopy in a warm, humid environment. To flourish, it requires indirect light, high humidity (at least 60%), and a constant temperature between 18 and 25°C. Be aware, it is mildly toxic if ingested to both pets and humans due to calcium oxalates. While some Araceae are known for their air-purifying properties, this remains a secondary trait for this variety.

The Anthurium villenaorum can be placed in a warm, bright room with sufficient humidity. With its structured habit and graphic leaves, it pairs beautifully with minimalist, zen, or contemporary decor. Placed in a white ceramic pot or a natural wicker planter, it also complements a Scandinavian or tropical aesthetic.

To create a harmonious display, pair it with a Philodendron gloriosum or an Alocasia cucullata, which share similar humidity and light requirements. Display it on a high shelf or decorative stand to showcase its velvety leaves and add height to your arrangement.

Potting advice, substrates and fertilisers

Repot every 2 to 3 years, preferably in spring.
Use a well-aerated and free-draining compost mix, adding clay pebbles to improve drainage.
Apply a liquid fertiliser for flowering plants, rich in phosphorus, every 4 to 6 weeks during the active growth period (spring and summer). Reduce the frequency in autumn and winter.
