More information

A popular houseplant prized for its elongated dark green foliage variegated with golden yellow to lime green. It is also valued for its airy habit, both upright and spreading. Its modest size allows it to be placed on the floor or on furniture. This member of the Marantaceae family proves slightly more tolerant than some of its relatives. The more light the young plant receives, the more vibrant its foliage becomes. It thrives in bright, indirect light and prefers ambient humidity of around 50 to 70%. It flourishes in cool, well-drained, organic-rich soil at temperatures between 18 and 26°C.

Description

The Ctenanthe 'Golden Mosaic' is a variety with dark green foliage adorned with golden-yellow variegation. Its elongated, slightly undulate leaves borne on slender stems display random and contrasting golden patterns. This houseplant is also notable for its elegant, slightly spreading habit. Of tropical origin, it will bring an exotic and colourful touch to your interior. It is a resilient and adaptable companion that thrives under the right conditions while requiring less maintenance than some of its relatives.

Belonging to the Marantaceae family, the Ctenanthe 'Golden Mosaic' is also known as False Calathea Golden Mosaic or Ctenanthe pilosa Golden Mosaic. It originates from the Ctenanthe lubbersiana species native to the humid forests of Brazil where it flourishes under the dense canopy. The 'Golden Mosaic' variety is a cultivar selected for its striking lime yellow-green variegated foliage. It reaches 60 to 90 cm in height and 50 to 80 cm in width. New shoots emerge in soft green before maturing into a mix of vibrant yellow marbling on a dark green lamina. Additionally, like other marantaceae, its leaves fold up at night, a phenomenon known as nastic movement. The plant prefers bright but indirect light as direct sunlight may scorch its delicate leaves. It tolerates lower light conditions though its foliage will be less vibrant. Similarly, it can withstand relatively dry air but prefers ambient humidity of around 50 to 70%.

Placed on the floor, a low table, or a pedestal in an elegant planter, the Ctenanthe adds a light and airy presence and an exotic touch to rooms such as a living room, bedroom, or office, as long as the right conditions are met. To create a harmonious setting, pair it with plants that have similar needs such as certain Stromanthes like the Calathea sanguinea which enjoy bright light, or less demanding Araceae in terms of ambient humidity such as the Aglaonema.

Maintenance and care

Water when the substrate is dry on the surface. In winter, reduce the watering frequency. Mist the foliage regularly to maintain high ambient humidity.

Potting advice, substrates and fertilisers

Repot in spring every 1 to 2 years, or when the roots start to outgrow the pot.
Use a well-draining compost enriched with organic matter, ideally mixed with clay pebbles or perlite to promote aeration and prevent waterlogging.
A balanced liquid fertiliser for green plants is recommended, applied every 2 to 3 weeks during the growth period (spring and summer). Reduce the frequency in autumn and winter.

Houseplant care

Undemanding, this plant simply requires removing the yellowed leaves and wiping dusty leaves with a damp cloth to maintain their shine.
Prune the stems if necessary to encourage branching and maintain a compact shape.

Disease and pest advice

In case of a mealybug attack, use a cotton pad soaked in alcohol to remove them, then spray a soapy water solution to prevent further infestation.
