Description

Philodendron billietiae x atabapoense, born from the union of two tropical species, is a climbing plant that offers lush foliage. This rather rare, elegant hybrid, fits perfectly into contemporary or "jungle" settings. Place it in a spot bathed in light, but not in direct sunlight, and maintain high ambient humidity. A stake or support is recommended to support its climbing vegetation and showcase its magnificent leaves.

Belonging to the Araceae family, Philodendron billietiae x atabapoense is a hybrid resulting from the cross-breeding between Philodendron billietiae, a species with pointed leaves discovered by Frieda Billiet in 1981 in French Guiana, and P. atabapoense, native to southern Venezuela and the Amazonian regions of Brazil, with narrow, elongated leaves. This perennial climbing plant exhibits rapid growth, typically reaching a height of 1.5 to 2 m in a pot, with a spread of 60 to 90 cm. Its elongated, arrow-shaped leaves can grow up to 60 cm in length and 15 cm in width. They feature a deep green upper surface and a burgundy underside. The petioles may display orange hues, inherited from P. billietiae. Indoor flowering is rare and discreet. Like many Philodendrons, this plant is toxic if ingested.

Philodendron billietiae x atabapoense finds a place in a bright living room, a tropical conservatory, or even a well-lit office. For an even more spectacular effect, pair it with a Monstera adansonii with its perforated leaves or a Philodendron micans, with its velvety and trailing foliage; these plants will create a stunning tropical display.

Location

The Philodendron billietiae x atabapoense requires light, but cannot tolerate full sun behind a window. Avoid draughts and sudden temperature changes. A range between 18 and 25°C is ideal, with good humidity. Its long, graphic leaves make a striking statement in urban-jungle, minimalist or boho-chic decor. Place it in a large textured terracotta pot or a black metal planter for a modern contrast. A moss pole to guide its stems will allow its leaves to unfurl majestically.

Maintenance and care

Water when the substrate is dry on the surface, without letting water stagnate in the pot. Mist regularly to maintain good humidity.

Potting advice, substrates and fertilisers

Repot in spring, every 2 to 3 years or when the roots start to outgrow the pot. Use a slightly larger container.
Use a mix of tropical plant compost with added perlite and bark for good aeration.
Apply a liquid fertiliser specially formulated for foliage plants (NPK 10-10-10) every fortnight from spring to autumn. Discontinue feeding during winter.

Houseplant care

Clean the leaves regularly with a damp cloth to prevent dust build-up.
Pruning is optional, but you can remove damaged leaves at the base. Trim the tips of the stems to encourage branching in spring.

Disease and pest advice

In case of a mealybug infestation, clean the leaves with a cloth soaked in 70% alcohol. To prevent diseases, ensure good drainage and avoid overwatering.
