Description

Philodendron Minima (Monstera minima or Rhaphidophora tetrasperma), often nicknamed "Mini Monstera", is a sought-after houseplant, prized for its elegant foliage and vigorous growth. Its finely divided leaves with a glossy green hue bring an exotic and sophisticated touch to any interior, easily blending into contemporary or bohemian decor. Ideal for dressing up a wall or shelf, this climbing plant thrives when given a support to climb. To enjoy it for a long time, place it in a bright spot without direct sunlight and maintain some ambient humidity around its foliage.

Belonging to the Araceae family, Philodendron Minima is a perennial climbing plant native to the tropical forests of Thailand and Malaysia. Indoors, its growth is relatively fast; it typically reaches a height of 1.50 m to 2 m, with a similar spread, depending on how it is trained. Its glossy green leaves measure between 15 and 20 cm in length and feature deep splits, reminiscent of those of the Monstera deliciosa, though they are smaller and more delicate. Flowering indoors is rare, but in its natural habitat, it produces the discreet inflorescences typical of Araceae. Despite its common name, Philodendron Minima is neither a Philodendron nor a Monstera, but belongs to the Rhaphidophora genus.

The Rhaphidophora genus includes plants native to the tropical regions of Southeast Asia, evolving mainly in humid and shaded environments. In their natural habitat, these plants use their aerial roots to climb trees in search of filtered light. This adaptation explains their preference, as houseplants, for indirect light and a humid atmosphere. This Rhaphidophora is toxic if ingested.

With its finely divided leaves and climbing habit, Philodendron Minima is a decorative asset for creating a tropical vibe in a contemporary interior. Place it in a bright living room, bedroom, or even a sunlit conservatory—but not in direct sunlight. It works perfectly in a chic bohemian setting on a wall shelf or in a minimalist ceramic planter with Scandinavian style. To showcase it even more, guide it onto a moss pole or a decorative gold metal structure.

Maintenance and care

Water once a week, allowing the top 2 to 4 cm of soil to dry out between waterings. In winter, reduce to watering every two weeks. Ensure that water does not stagnate in the saucer. Mist 2 to 3 times a week, especially during dry periods or when the heating is on.

Potting advice, substrates and fertilisers

Repot in spring, every 1 to 2 years, or as soon as the roots fill the pot.
Use a mix of houseplant compost with perlite or clay pebbles for drainage.
Apply a liquid fertiliser specially formulated for green plants (NPK 10-10-10), applied every 4 weeks in spring and summer, diluted to half the recommended dose.

Houseplant care

Remove dead leaves regularly to prevent mould. Wipe the leaves with a damp cloth to remove dust and maintain their natural shine.
Prune lightly if necessary to control growth or remove damaged leaves. Prune just above a node to encourage new shoots.

Disease and pest advice

In case of scale insects, clean the leaves with a damp cloth soaked in a mixture of water and black soap. Repeat weekly until they disappear.
