Description

The Philodendron melanochrysum also known as Velvet-leaf Philodendron or Black and Gold Philodendron is a remarkable houseplant prized for its lush foliage and is relatively easy to care for. Its heart-shaped leaves with a deep green hue and velvety texture bring an incredible touch of exoticism indoors. This variety will delight enthusiasts of unique plants.

Belonging to the Araceae family, the Philodendron melanochrysum is native to the humid Andean foothills of Colombia, particularly the provinces of Chocó and Antioquia where it grows at around 500 metres above sea level. This climbing plant can reach up to 2 metres in height indoors with the support of a moss pole. Its growth is rapid under optimal conditions. Initially coppery with a golden tint, Its leaves mature into a deep, almost black green. They can grow up to 25 cm long, but may reach even larger dimensions in ideal conditions. The lighter veins contrast with the dark lamina, enhancing the plant's decorative appeal.

The Philodendron melanochrysum is perfect for adding a tropical touch to your home. It can be grown in a pot with a moss pole to support its climbing habit, or in a hanging basket to allow its long stems to cascade. For a harmonious display, it can be paired with plants sharing similar care requirements such as the Monstera deliciosa, Calathea orbifolia, Ficus elastica, and Syngonium podophyllum.

Location

The Philodendron melanochrysum prefers moderate to bright indirect light, avoiding direct sunlight which could scorch its leaves. It thrives in high humidity, reminiscent of its tropical habitat, with an ideal temperature range between 18 and 25°C. Avoid draughts and sudden temperature fluctuations. Be mindful of dry air during heating periods. It adapts well to bright rooms such as the living room, conservatory, or a bathroom with a window, where humidity is naturally higher.

Maintenance and care

Water when the top few centimetres of the substrate are dry (adjust the frequency according to the season and air dryness). Use room-temperature water, preferably non-calcareous. In winter, reduce the watering frequency. Mist the foliage regularly to maintain humidity.

Potting advice, substrates and fertilisers

Repot preferably in spring, every 2 to 3 years, or when the roots start to outgrow the pot. Use a slightly larger container.
Use a well-draining compost, made up of tropical plant compost mixed with orchid bark to ensure good root aeration.
Liquid fertiliser for green plants, rich in nitrogen (NPK 3-1-2) diluted to half/recommended dose. Apply once a month in spring and summer. Reduce application in winter.

Houseplant care

Wipe its leaves with a damp cloth to remove dust and promote good photosynthesis.
Remove any damaged leaves regularly to encourage healthy growth.
