Description

The Philodendron ‘Brasil’ is a must-have houseplant for lovers of exoticism. With its heart-shaped, randomly variegated, deep green and bright yellow leaves, this variety brightens up any room, adding a tropical and warm touch to your décor. The plant can easily climb up (with a stake), be used in a hanging basket, or be placed on a shelf where its lianas can spread freely. It is an elegant and easy-to-grow variety in moderately moist ambioent air.

The Philodendron ‘Brasil’ is a horticultural variety derived from the Philodendron scandens species (synonym Philodendron hederaceum var. hederaceum), belonging to the Araceae family. This cultivar was created by Acosta Ruben E. in Brazil and launched in 1999 by the Dutch publisher TS Royalty. It stands out for its particularly decorative variegated foliage: thin and glossy heart-shaped, 8 to 15 cm long leaves blending shades of green and yellow, reminiscent of the colours of the Brazilian flag, hence its name. It is a perennial plant with a climbing or trailing habit. Indoors, its stems can reach a length of 1 m, though it can climb up to 3 m if given a suitable support. Plants grown as climbers develop larger leaves, while unsupported ones produce smaller leaves. Its growth is rapid.

Warning - Like many members of the Araceae family, the Philodendron ‘Brasil’ contains calcium oxalate crystals, which can be toxic if ingested.

The Philodendron ‘Brasil’ thrives in bright rooms but not directly by a window, such as in a living room, bedroom, or office, where its vibrant foliage adds a lovely tropical touch. Pair it with easy-going and tolerant plants such as the Pothos ‘Marble Queen’ (Epipremnum aureum) and the Chlorophytum comosum ‘Variegatum’ (variegated spider plant).

Location

Avoid direct sunlight to prevent leaf scorching, as well as cold draughts or placement near direct heat sources. Although the Philodendron Brasil can tolerate low light conditions, its colours will be less vibrant in such settings. It enjoys moderate to high ambient humidity and prefers temperatures between 18 and 24°C, though it can tolerate drops to a minimum of 15°C. Place it in a hanging basket to showcase its trailing stems or let it climb a moss pole to add height to a contemporary setting. Perfect for a boho-chic, urban jungle, or even minimalist style, it pairs beautifully with terracotta or ceramic pots in neutral or pastel tones.

Maintenance and care

Water when the top 2-3 cm of the compost is dry. Reduce the frequency in winter. Mist once or twice a week to maintain high humidity, especially during the heating season.

Potting advice, substrates and fertilisers

Repot preferably in spring, every 2 to 3 years, or when the roots start to outgrow the pot. Use a slightly larger container.
Use a well-draining compost enriched with organic matter, a light mix with clay pebbles for good drainage
Apply a liquid fertiliser for green plants (NPK 10-10-10), applied every 3 to 4 weeks from spring to autumn. Reduce the application in winter.

Houseplant care

It occasionally loses leaves, especially in winter. Wipe its leaves with a damp cloth to remove dust.
Remove any damaged leaves regularly to encourage healthy growth.

Disease and pest advice

If scale insects appear, clean the leaves with a soft cloth soaked in soapy water or 70% alcohol. To prevent root rot, reduce watering. The Philodendron 'Brasil' is ideal for gardening novices due to its hardiness and tolerance to various conditions.
