Description

The Philodendron 'Pink Bikini' forms a compact and low-maintenance plant. Its ovate to elongated leaves stand out with a unique variegation, blending shades of pink, white, and green. Sought after by houseplant enthusiasts, this 'Philo' fits into contemporary, exotic, or collection settings.

Belonging to the Araceae family, the Philodendron erubescens from which the 'Pink Bikini' originates is a climbing species native to Colombia. It results from a mutation during the cellular propagation of the Philodendron 'Rojo Congo' and is also known as Philodendron 'Birkin Pink'. At maturity, the 'Pink Bikini' reaches a height of 60 cm with a similar spread. This Philodendron has an upright, bushy growth. Its colouration is unpredictable: juvenile leaves first appear in a vibrant green, then the plant gradually reveals stunning pink and white stripes on its glossy foliage with pink petioles. While indoor flowering is rare, when it occurs, it produces the discreet inflorescences typical of Araceae.

Warning - Like many philodendrons, this plant is toxic if ingested due to calcium oxalate crystals.

The Philodendron 'Pink Bikini' can be grown freely in a decorative pot without staking. Placed in a spacious living room, a well-lit conservatory, or as a focal point, it draws attention with its stunning foliage. Pair it with plants sharing similar care needs, such as other Araceae like Alocasia zebrina.

Location

Indoors, the Philodendron Pink Bikini thrives in bright light while tolerating more filtered conditions, though its colours will be less pronounced. Avoid direct sunlight to prevent leaf scorch, as well as cold draughts. Its growth occurs in moderate ambient humidity typical of homes, without requiring misting, though humidity above 60% encourages better growth. Its exotic appearance blends perfectly with contemporary or urban jungle styles.

Maintenance and care

Water when the top 2-3 cm of the compost feels dry to the touch.

Potting advice, substrates and fertilisers

Repot preferably in spring, every 2 to 3 years, or when the roots start to outgrow the pot. Use a slightly larger container.
Use a well-draining compost enriched with organic matter, a light mix with perlite and clay pebbles for good drainage.
Apply a liquid fertiliser for houseplants every 4 to 6 weeks during the growth period (spring-summer).

Houseplant care

Clean the leaves regularly with a damp cloth to prevent dust buildup.
Pruning is generally not necessary. Remove any damaged leaves regularly to encourage healthy growth.

Disease and pest advice
