Description

Philodendron sp. Colombia is a rare houseplant prized for its lush foliage and tropical appearance. With its large, glossy, and deeply veined leaves, it looks stunning in a contemporary or urban jungle-style interior, thriving in bright spots but not in direct sunlight. It's a relatively easy variety to grow in an environment that isn't too dry.

Philodendron sp. Colombia belongs to the botanical family Araceae (the same as Arums), which includes many plants with large, decorative leaves. "Philodendron sp." indicates that the species to which this plant, found in Colombia, belongs has not yet been formally described or scientifically named. It is a tropical perennial with an upright and slightly spreading habit, featuring elegantly extending leaves. At maturity, it can reach 60 to 80 cm in height indoors, or even more, depending on growing conditions. Its leaves are broad, ovate to lanceolate in shape, with a satin-like texture and prominent dark veins. Their green hue may vary depending on the lighting. The plant rarely flowers indoors. Philodendron sp. Colombia thrives in a rich, well-draining substrate with regular but moderate watering. It is toxic to pets and humans if ingested, due to the presence of calcium oxalate crystals.

Philodendron sp. Colombia is a major decorative asset for creating a tropical and sophisticated atmosphere in your home. Place it in a bright living room, bedroom, or a slightly heated conservatory, where it can flourish away from harsh sunlight.

Location

Avoid direct sunlight to prevent leaf scorching, as well as cold draughts. Native to the tropical forests of Colombia, this Philodendron thrives in warm and humid climates. It grows naturally in the shade of tall canopy trees, which explains its preference for indirect light and a humid environment. Showcase it in a textured ceramic planter or on a natural wood stand to enhance its exotic appeal.

Maintenance and care

Water when the top 2-3 cm of the compost is dry. Mist regularly to maintain high humidity, especially during the heating season.

Potting advice, substrates and fertilisers

Repot preferably in spring, every 2 to 3 years, or when the roots start to outgrow the pot. Use a slightly larger container.
Well-draining compost enriched with organic matter, a light mix with clay pebbles for good drainage
Liquid fertiliser for green plants (NPK 10-10-10), applied every 3 to 4 weeks from spring to autumn. Reduce application in winter.

Houseplant care

Wipe its leaves with a damp cloth to remove dust.
It occasionally loses leaves, especially in winter. Remove damaged ones regularly to encourage healthy growth.

Disease and pest advice
