Description

The Philodendron 'White Wizard' is an exceptional houseplant, perfect for enlivening a green corner with its variegated foliage of deep green and pure white. Each of its heart-shaped leaves is unique. Ideal for contemporary or minimalist interiors, this philodendron thrives in a very bright room, but without direct sunlight. Provide it with a moss-covered stake to guide its growth and reveal its full splendour!

The Philodendron 'White Wizard' (Philodendron erubescens 'White Wizard') belongs to the same Araceae family as arums and monsteras. This cultivar stands out for its leaves, petioles, and stems variegated with immaculate white and intense green. A climbing perennial, it can reach between 60 cm and 2 m in height indoors, especially when supported by a stake. Its heart-shaped, smooth and satin-like textured leaves vary in size depending on growing conditions, but typically measure between 15 and 30 cm in length. Climbing specimens develop larger leaves than those left to trail freely. Native to the humid tropical forests of Colombia, the botanical Philodendron erubescens species grows wild under the dense canopy of forests, climbing tree trunks using its aerial roots. These conditions explain its need for bright but indirect light, as well as a warm and slightly humid environment when grown indoors: it prefers temperatures between 18 and 25°C.

Warning - This plant is toxic if ingested, as it contains calcium oxalate crystals.

To create a jungle or tropical atmosphere, pair the Philodendron 'White Wizard' with plants like the Calathea 'White Fusion', which shares its love for soft light and good humidity, or the Monstera adansonii, whose fenestrated foliage contrasts beautifully with the white marbling of the Philodendron.

Maintenance and care

Allow the top layer of compost (3 cm) to dry out between waterings. Avoid standing water in the pot to prevent rot.

Potting advice, substrates and fertilisers

Repot every 2 years, in spring, when the young plant is outgrowing its pot.
Mix a houseplant compost with perlite, adding clay pebbles to improve drainage.
Apply a liquid fertiliser for green plants (NPK 10-10-10) to be applied every 2 weeks during the growth period (spring-summer). In winter, apply once a month.

Houseplant care

Clean the leaves regularly with a damp cloth to prevent dust buildup.
Remove damaged leaves regularly. If the plant becomes leggy as it grows, you can definitely cut some stems at the base with sterilised secateurs.

Disease and pest advice

In case of a mealybug infestation, clean the leaves with a cloth soaked in diluted alcohol or use an insecticidal soap.
