Description

Philodendron holtonianum 'Trilobe' is a rare variety with an unusual appearance. Its leaves feature three unequal lobes. The glossy leaves are a vibrant green and become wrinkled at maturity. Sought after by indoor plant enthusiasts, this "philo" fits well in contemporary, exotic, or collection settings.

Belonging to the Araceae family, Philodendron holtonianum, from which 'Trilobe' originates, is an epiphytic species native to the humid forests of Central and South America. At maturity, it reaches a height of 50 cm to 1 m and a spread of 50 cm to 80 cm. This philodendron has a creeping growth habit, and when grown freely, it will develop a trailing habit. Its uniqueness lies in its highly distinctive foliage, featuring trilobed leaves. When young, the central lobe is long and narrow, with two small lateral lobes. At maturity, these two outer lobes become almost as large as the central one. Flowering indoors is rare and subtle.Philodendron holtonianum is a fairly adaptable species in terms of growing conditions.

Philodendron 'Holtonianum Trilobe' can also be grown as a climbing plant on a support. Placed in a spacious living room, well-positioned for visibility, or a bright conservatory, it draws attention due to the size and beauty of its foliage. Pair it with plants that have similar needs, such as those from the Araceae family like Alocasia zebrina, or with a Calathea orbifolia.

Location

Avoid direct sunlight to prevent leaf scorch. Indoors, the Philodendron Trilobed prefers bright, indirect light but will tolerate filtered light; similarly, it thrives in high humidity but will adapt to a (slightly) drier environment. It can be left to grow in a trailing habit or trained onto a thick moss pole, where it will anchor its roots and climb. Its exotic appearance blends perfectly with contemporary or urban jungle styles, and its striking foliage makes it an attractive focal point.

Apply a liquid fertiliser for houseplants every 4 to 6 weeks during the growth period (spring-summer).

Houseplant care

Clean the leaves regularly with a damp cloth to prevent dust buildup.
