Description

The Philodendron 'Narrow Ring of Fire' is a fairly rare variety, sought after by enthusiasts for its narrow, dentate-edged, variegated leaves. It boasts large, undulate, elongated, green, white, yellow, and pink coloured leaves, with each leaf displaying a unique pattern. This is a highly exotic-looking, slow growing climbing plant requiring a support to cling to. To see it thrive, provide it with fairly high ambient humidity, around 60 to 80%, in a very bright spot but without direct sunlight.

Belonging to the Araceae family, the Philodendron 'Narrow Ring of Fire' is a hybrid cultivar derived from the Philodendron wendlandii × Philodendron tortum. Its parent plants originate from the humid forests of Central and South America. The former develops narrow leaves, while the latter produces spectacularly dissected foliage. At maturity, with its slow growth, the 'Narrow Ring of Fire' can reach a height of 2 m and a spread of 50 cm to 70 cm. The lanceolate and pointed leaves display unpredictable mosaics combining white, cream, golden, or even coppery pink speckles. Initially upright, the plant later adopts a more spreading habit. This philodendron has a climbing habit—you can grow it on a thick moss pole where it will anchor its roots. Flowering indoors is as rare as it is subtle. Indoors, this philodendron prefers bright light and high humidity.

Place the Philodendron 'Narrow Ring of Fire' in a spacious living room where it can be prominently displayed, or in a bright conservatory—it will draw attention with the size and beauty of its foliage. You may pair it with plants that have similar needs such as those from the Araceae family, like the Alocasia zebrina.

Maintenance and care

Water when the top 2-3 cm of the compost is dry. Mist regularly to maintain high humidity, especially during the heating season.

Potting advice, substrates and fertilisers

Repot preferably in spring, every 2 to 3 years, or when the roots start to outgrow the pot. Use a slightly larger container.
Use a well-draining compost enriched with organic matter, a light mix based on turf with perlite and clay pebbles for good drainage.
Apply a liquid fertiliser for houseplants every 4 weeks during the growth period (spring-summer).

Houseplant care

Clean the leaves regularly with a damp cloth to prevent dust build-up and promote good photosynthesis.
Remove damaged leaves regularly to encourage healthy growth.
