More information

This philodendron is a variegated leaf variety, always popular among indoor plant enthusiasts, but unlike some cultivars with white variegations, it is not very difficult to grow. Its large ovate or elongated leaves, with a smooth and thick texture, are randomly spotted and speckled with white to cream. Being a climbing variety, it needs to be attached to a support. It thrives in bright light but without direct sunlight, and appreciates ambient humidity of 60 to 70% to flourish. It does well in temperatures between 18 and 27°C.

Description

Philodendron 'Jose Buono' is a variegated, ornamental variety that is not too difficult to cultivate. Its large, broad, heart-shaped to ovate-elongated leaves are randomly marked with cream and white. Their smooth texture intensely captures the light. To help it thrive, consider providing a thick moss pole or a support like a trellis for climbing. With rapid growth, it can reach up to 1.5 m in height indoors. It fits well in contemporary, exotic, or "jungle"-style settings.

Belonging to the Araceae familyPhilodendron 'Jose Buono' is a climbing variety, derived from an undetermined species, likely native to the humid forests of South America. At maturity, it can reach a height of 1 m to 1.50 m and a spread of 40 to 60 cm. The smooth and glossy leaves have a very elongated heart shape. They display random white to cream variegation, appearing as speckles, marbling, or even large coloured patches. Although flowering indoors is rare, when it occurs, it will be small flowers typical of the Araceae family. In their natural habitat, Philodendrons grow in humid forests, benefiting from ambient moisture and dappled light filtered through the canopy. These conditions suggest that indoors, they prefer bright light (but no direct sun) and high humidity to thrive fully.

Philodendron 'Jose Buono' should be trained on a sphagnum moss pole or trellis. It is advisable to reposition the plant occasionally so its aerial roots remain in contact with the support and it continues to flourish. To enhance its aesthetic, pair it with plants with similar needs, such as Alocasias or Syngoniums, also members of the Araceae family.

Potting advice, substrates and fertilisers

Repot preferably in spring, every 2 to 3 years, or when the roots start to outgrow the pot. Use a slightly larger container.
Use a well-draining potting mix enriched with organic matter, a light blend with clay pebbles for good drainage.
Apply a liquid fertiliser for houseplants every 4 to 6 weeks during the growth period (spring-summer).
