Description

Philodendron burle-marxii is a stunning tropical plant with glossy emerald-green leaves in an elongated heart shape. With its climbing or bushy habit, this variety fits effortlessly into contemporary, bohemian, or exotic interiors. Ideal for dressing up a shelf, a living wall, or a hanging planter, this luxurious-looking "philo" is surprisingly easy to care for. Place it near a window with indirect light and mist it regularly to maintain its vibrant foliage.

Philodendron burle-marxii belongs to the Araceae family and was named in honour of the Brazilian landscape architect Roberto Burle Marx, renowned for his modern plant compositions. Native to the humid tropical forests of South America (Brazil, Colombia, Ecuador), this species thrives in shady, humid environments, often in the undergrowth. Its aerial roots allow it to climb trees. It is a perennial climbing plant that can reach 1 to 1.5 m in height indoors, with a spread of 50 to 100 cm. Its habit will be climbing or bushy, depending on whether it is staked or not. Its 15 to 30 cm long leaves are ovate to cordate, slightly pleated, and intense, glossy green, irresistibly evoking tropical jungles. The flowering, a small spathe typical of Araceae, is rare indoors and inconspicuous. Philodendron burle-marxii is toxic to pets and humans if ingested. However, it poses no risk when handling its leaves.

Philodendron burle-marxii is an excellent choice for motivated beginners. For enthusiasts, this variety can become a true decorative asset when trained on supports or allowed to climb a living wall. It pairs beautifully with Monstera adansonii for a jungle effect or Scindapsus pictus 'Argyraeus', with its silver-speckled leaves creating an elegant contrast. It is a versatile and decorative must-have for stylish interiors!

Maintenance and care

Water when the top 2-3 centimetres of compost are dry. In winter, reduce to watering every two weeks. Mist regularly.

Potting advice, substrates and fertilisers

Repot preferably in spring, every 2 to 3 years, or when the roots start to outgrow the pot. Use a slightly larger container.
Use a well-draining compost enriched with organic matter, a light mix with clay pebbles for good drainage
Apply a liquid fertiliser for green plants (NPK 10-10-10 or 20-20-20) from April to September, every two weeks. Dilute by half to avoid overfeeding.

Houseplant care

Gently wipe the leaves with a damp cloth to promote photosynthesis and inspect the plant regularly to detect pests or diseases early on.
Pruning is generally not necessary, but can help densify the plant. However, it is recommended to regularly remove yellowed or damaged leaves to encourage healthy growth and maintain a tidy appearance.

Disease and pest advice

Spray a mixture of soapy water (diluted black soap) in case of a mealybug infestation. Increase humidity to prevent spider mites.
