Description

Philodendron ‘Sunlight’ is a houseplant with stunning coppery and golden-hued leaves. As a climbing variety, it fits perfectly into modern, baroque or "urban jungle" decor styles. Guide the plant up a decorative support or let its stems cascade gracefully. Place this philodendron in a bright spot, but away from direct sunlight, and maintain good humidity to keep it looking beautiful for many years to come.

Philodendron 'Sunlight' belongs to the Araceae family. Native to the humid tropical forests of Colombia, Philodendron erubescens thrives in the undergrowth, climbing trees with the help of its aerial roots. Sunlight is a prized horticultural selection, valued for its ornamental foliage. This climbing perennial has a moderate to fast growth rate. Trained on a support, it typically reaches a height of 1.30 m to 1.50 m, depending on growing conditions. Its sturdy, reddish stems produce heart-shaped leaves, measuring up to 40 cm in length. Young leaves emerge in coppery-red hues, maturing to a glossy dark green on the upper surface, with a coppery or purple underside. This plant is toxic if ingested, due to the presence of calcium oxalate, and may cause skin irritation.

Philodendron erubescens ‘Sunlight’ can be placed in a bright living room, conservatory, or office, where it adds an elegant tropical touch. Pair it with a Monstera adansonii for a play on airy textures or with a Scindapsus pictus ‘Argyraeus’ to contrast their satin and velvety foliage. Versatile and decorative, it enhances your interior while remaining easy to grow.

Maintenance and care

Allow the top third of the compost to dry out between waterings. Water once a week during the growth period, once every two weeks in winter. Frequent misting to compensate for dry air in heated interiors.

Potting advice, substrates and fertilisers

Repot every two years, preferably in spring, when the plant enters a period of active growth. Use a pot slightly larger than the previous one.
Use a universal potting mix blended with perlite or coconut fibre. Add clay pebbles at the bottom of the pot to improve drainage.
Apply a liquid fertiliser for houseplants (NPK formula 10-10-10 or 20-10-20) from March to September (every 2 to 3 weeks). Reduce fertiliser in winter, unless the plant continues to grow in a warm and bright environment.

Houseplant care

Clean the leaves regularly with a damp cloth to prevent dust build-up.
Philodendron Sunlight is easy to care for with just a few key steps. Remove yellowed or damaged leaves as needed. Prune overly long stems to control its shape and encourage branching.

Disease and pest advice

In case of mealybug infestation, clean the leaves with a cloth soaked in diluted 70° alcohol. To prevent red spider mites, mist the young plant regularly to maintain humidity.
