Agapanthus Pitchoune® Blue is planted in spring, after the hard frosts. In Mediterranean regions, September and October are preferable, when the rains return. The stump is covered with 5 to 10 cm of soil, in full sun or partial shade in a warm climate, sheltered from cold winds. A spacing of 40 to 50 cm between each plant is sufficient. It grows in fertile, loose, well-drained soil, whether acid, neutral or alkaline. The soil must not retain water in winter. In clay soil, adding gravel improves drainage. Regular watering is useful during the first two summers and for plants grown in pots. Once established, this variety tolerates summer drought quite well in open ground.
In cold regions, the stump must be protected with a dry mulch, and the pots will be overwintered in a bright, cool, frost-free place. A fertiliser rich in potash encourages flowering. The clump can be divided every three or four years.

Hardiness is the lowest winter temperature a plant can endure without suffering serious damage or even dying. However, hardiness is affected by location (a sheltered area, such as a patio), protection (winter cover) and soil type (hardiness is improved by well-drained soil).

In temperate climates, pruning of spring-flowering shrubs (forsythia, spireas, etc.) should be done just after flowering.
Pruning of summer-flowering shrubs (Indian Lilac, Perovskia, etc.) can be done in winter or spring.
In cold regions as well as with frost-sensitive plants, avoid pruning too early when severe frosts may still occur.
