Thank you to the individuals (Laetitia for order preparation and Sandie for shipping), the 3 bulbs received appear to be healthy. Planted near pink-coloured roses in my specific research area, I am now patiently awaiting their growth...(or lack thereof?).

Description

Iris 'Cherry Garden', is a dwarf variety with ruffled, deep red flowers with a silky texture, in April. Violet beards complete this intensely romantic combination. This iris quickly forms beautiful flowering clumps, perfect for creating a nice contrast with white or pink flowers in rockeries and borders.

Iris 'Cherry Garden' is a rhizomatous and deciduous perennial plant that forms erect clumps from spring. It belongs to the Iridaceae family. It is one of the many modest-sized cultivars that appeared in the 1950s. Originally, the 'lilliput' category referred to the cross-breeding of an Iris pumila and a tall iris. This term now generally refers to the category of standard dwarf irises (SDB). 'Cherry Garden' will reach a height of 15 to 25 cm (6 to 10in) when in bloom, with numerous buds. The clump will spread indefinitely over time, with the central rhizomes becoming bare in favour of the external rhizomes. It has a dense clump habit. The foliage consists of long, sword-shaped, glaucous green leaves with prominent veins. Floral stems appear in March and produce flowers in April, in the middle of the rockery iris season, opening from the top towards the lower branches. The colour is enhanced by the silky texture of the petals and sepals.

To accompany irises, choose plants based on their requirements (exposure, soil, etc.), growth (low-growing or light foliage plants), decorative appearance and flowering time. For example, Gauras will create little shade for the irises and will keep the faded iris bed attractive throughout the summer. Eschscholzia will be happy with the same dry and poor soil as the iris. Geraniums, salvias, and Libertia also accompany irises very well. Slopes and terraced edges can be stabilized by dense planting of old diploid varieties that require little care. If the goal is more decorative and access for care is possible, choose more modern varieties, such as intermediates that are less likely to be knocked over.

Path border: the entire range can be used, from early dwarfs under 40 cm (16in), to tall irises over 75 cm (30in) that bloom in May, including intermediates (in terms of size and earliness) and border irises, which are medium-sized but bloom with the tall ones. Tall irises, exposed to the wind, may need staking to prevent them from falling over.

Massif border: the domain of irises... both border and dwarf, depending on the circumstances.

Mixed border: the entire range of sizes can be used, depending on the position (front, back) and the size of the surrounding plants.

Planting and care

Do you have a sunny, warm location, rather dry in summer?
This is the ideal location for planting irises! In the shade, they grow but do not bloom. They are hardy and do not need winter protection. Well-drained soil is perfect, even dry and chalky. Soil that is too wet promotes rhizome rot. Plant from July to September. This allows the rhizomes enough time to grow and develop new roots before winter. They should be planted as soon as they are purchased for the best results. Plan to divide irises every 4 years or so to give them fresh soil. They have vigorous growth and require space to develop and flower well. Plant with spacing adapted to the size and vigour of the variety: about 34-50 cm (13-20in) for tall ones. In a monochrome planting, the rhizomes are planted in a staggered pattern. To create a mix of colours, plant them in groups of several plants of the same variety. Always consider the direction of rhizome growth by arranging them in a star shape, with buds and leaves facing outward, and spacing them well away from other varieties so they have room to develop.

Planting

Dig a hole that is wide and deep enough. Make a conical mound of soil on which to place the rhizome and spread out the roots. Cover the roots. It is important for the rhizome to be left just above the surface of the soil. It should not be planted in a dip (risk of rot), so anticipate that the soil will settle and the iris will sink. In clay or moist soil, the rhizome should even be left slightly elevated on a small mound. To make the soil stick to the roots, lightly firm and water abundantly after planting. Water 2-3 times if necessary until it takes root.

Maintenance:

Keep the soil free of weeds by shallow hoeing, taking care not to damage the rhizomes or roots. Weeds shade the irises, retain moisture (causing rot), and attract slugs. Similarly, cut off dry leaves. If they are diseased (reddish-brown spots of heterosporosis), burn them. Remove faded flowers.
