Trollius stenopetalus - Globe flower

Ideal by the edge of a water feature or in a flower bed, Trollius stenopetalus stands out with its dazzling yellow summer flowering, enhanced by bright green foliage. A second flowering can be observed in late summer. This perennial, hardy and tolerant plant, thrives in sunny and partially shaded locations. It grows in moist, even damp soils.

From the buttercup family, Trollius stenopetalus is native to the mountains of northern Myanmar and western China. It forms a compact clump that does not exceed 50 to 70 cm in height when in bloom, in June-July. Its dissected, deciduous foliage disappears in winter. It is vibrant green and highlights its large semi-double yellow flowers. When cut, they reveal a golden yellow stamen core. A second flowering sometimes occurs in late summer. Cut the clump back to ground level after the first flowering to encourage this reblooming. It is a flowering plant that attracts pollinators. Feel free to cut a few to brighten up your cut flower compositions.

Trollius stenopetalus is a low-maintenance plant, perfect for embellishing the surroundings of a water feature or a stream. Don't hesitate to plant it in groups of 3 or 5 for an interesting mass effect. If you don't have much space, it will fit perfectly in the heart of a flower bed with moist soil. In sunny locations, consider Epimedium pinnatum ssp. colchicum which offers yellow flowers in March-April. In partially shaded areas, you have a wide choice with Tricyrtis hirta Miyazaki, Hosta Beach Boy or Dicentra spectabilis 'White Gold', all perennials that thrive in soil that does not dry out.
