Description

This Trollius collection, also known as Globe flowers, is a selection of perennial globe flowers that bring gardens to life in spring with their bright cup-shaped flowers. Combining the 'Alabaster' variety and two botanical species called Trollius asiaticus and Trollius europaeus, it offers a beautiful range of colours, from creamy white to vibrant yellow. These plants have elegant, deeply indented, deciduous foliage. They thrive in sun while tolerating partial shade, and prefer moist and humus-bearing soil. Their melliferous flowering attracts pollinators, promoting biodiversity in the garden. These perennials are cold-resistant and can tolerate any moderately dry garden soil.

The collection consists of:

1 x Trollius 'Alabaster': distinguished by its creamy white flowers, adding a touch of elegance and softness to the garden. Alabaster-like flowers, resembling large semi-double buttercups, which vary between creamy white, ivory and pale yellow. Its flowering stems reach between 40 and 60 cm (16 and 24in) in height.

1 x Trollius asiaticus: a botanical species known as Asian globe flower, appreciated for its golden yellow to golden orange flowers that catch the eye. Its ability to thrive in various conditions makes it a versatile choice for gardeners. Depending on the growing conditions, it will reach a height of 30 to 80 cm (12 to 32in) with a diameter of 30 cm (12in).

1 x Trollius europaeus: the mountain globe flower, an extra-large buttercup for cool soil. Its bright yellow flowers are radiant and carried by 60 cm (24in)-tall stems. It is a robust plant, the pillar of the collection, often chosen for its vigour and generous flowering.

These globe flowers can be planted in spring or autumn, depending on the climate, preferably in March in colder regions. They can be used in borders or to enhance the surroundings of water features, in full sun or partial shade. These plants should be spaced about 30 to 40 cm (12 to 16in) apart. For a dense and natural effect, plant 5 to 7 per square meter.

To accompany this Trollius collection, choose plants that thrive under the same growing conditions: moist soil, full sun or partial shade. The Siberian Iris 'Blue King', with its intensely violet flowers, will create a stunning contrast against the bright Trollius. Next to them, the Astilbes 'Fanal' with their dark red inflorescences will offer a complementary texture and touch of colour. The Giant Ethiopian Arum 'Himalaya', or Zantedeschia aethiopica, with its pure white spathes, will create a beautiful effect when planted in clusters among the globe flowers. Lastly, the White Obedient Plant 'Alba', with its white spikes, will add height and an interesting texture to the display.

Planting and care

These Trollius love having their feet in the mud and their heads in the sun. It is in marshy no-man's-land areas where water meets soil that they will most happily prosper. However, they can also grow in any good, not too dry garden soil in sun or partial shade. Pruning the clumps after flowering sometimes promotes a second flowering later in the season, but this is not always the case.
