Planting and care

The perennial Geranium cinereum 'Purple Pillow' should be planted in spring or autumn. This variety, like all other perennial geraniums, is not very demanding regarding the situation and soil quality. It can be placed in any fertile soil, not waterlogged, and well-drained. It tolerates limestone. The Cinereum Geranium thrives in the sun, which promotes flowering, or in partial shade. To plant, work the soil to a depth of 20 cm, crumble well, and add a base fertiliser such as dried blood or dehydrated horn at the bottom of the planting hole. Remove your plant from its pot and position, covering the top of the root ball with 3 cm of soil, backfill and water generously to eliminate air pockets. Space the plants 30 cm apart. In dry weather, it is necessary to water regularly for a few weeks to facilitate rooting, even though it requires little moisture in summer. However, give it little water in winter. From July to September, remove faded flowers and leaves to encourage new growth. If the cold has not destroyed the foliage, trim back the large clumps every spring to keep them compact and promote new growth. You can also trim back after flowering and water well to encourage the plant to produce a neat clump again.
