Hello, All the ones I ordered (Ajuga tenorii Princess Nadia) have withered. They were planted at the base of a tree in partial shade. No response to my complaint (*2) via email. Not very keen on making plans with this website for next spring.

Description

Ajuga reptans Atropurpurea is a creeping perennial that spreads rapidly through stolons. This evergreen plant blooms from May to July, producing short whorled spikes that can reach a height of 15 cm (6in). These spikes are composed of an abundance of labiate flowers (the corolla has two lip-shaped lobes). These small flowers, measuring 1 to 2 cm (1in), are dark blue in colour.

Also known as Creeping Bugle, this Ajuga has stems with pinkish-green rosette leaves. Measuring 10 cm (4in) long, they are slightly dentate. Its evergreen foliage adds winter interest to the garden and makes it a magnificent groundcover. This plant reaches a height of 15 cm (6in) at maturity. Native to Europe, the Caucasus, and Iran, it is very hardy.

Bugle can be found in borders, rock gardens, flower beds, as well as in damp areas such as along streams. It is also suitable for planting under bushes, at the edge of forests, and in hedges. Although it can be invasive, it is easily controlled. Ajuga thrives alongside campanulas, hellebores, Lamium maculatum, Japanese primroses, and heathers. In the Middle Ages, Ajuga reptans Atropurpurea was known for its medicinal properties for treating haemorrhages and diarrhoea.

Planting and care

This easy-to-grow plant can be exposed to partial shade or sunlight. If you leave it in the sun during the summer, make sure the soil is always moist. Do not place it in direct sunlight as it may burn the foliage. It is a species that can even be cultivated in dense shade. Plant Ajuga in any fresh, normal to poor and humus-rich soil. It can be planted in autumn (September to November) or in spring (March to April). Prepare a planting hole measuring 20 cm (8in) x 20 cm (8in) x 20 cm (8in). The top of the root ball should be covered with 3 cm (1in) of soil. Water generously to eliminate air pockets. Regular watering should be done for a few weeks if the weather is dry to help the plant to establish. Ajuga can be susceptible to powdery mildew.
