Description

The Abies concolour 'Compacta' is a dwarf variety of the Colorado fir, a small, very slow-growing conifer that eventually forms a somewhat irregular pyramid with a beautiful powdery grey-blue colour. In spring, small purple cones appearing at the branch tips add colour to the foliage. It is perfect for structuring a small garden or a large rockery. Its ease of cultivation and ornamental appeal earned it a 'Garden Merit Award' in England.

The Colorado fir 'Compacta' is a horticultural selection sometimes sold under the names Abies concolor 'Glauca Nana' or Abies concolor 'Glauca Compacta'. It is a conifer from the Pinaceae family. The wild form originates from the Rocky Mountains (USA) where it grows at between 1,000 and 3,000 m altitudes. It is a very hardy montane climate species but which dislikes extreme heat. The 'Compacta' variety exhibits a very slow growth of around 3 to 4 cm per year: by the age of 15, it rarely exceeds 1.50 m in height. Its spread varies depending on the plant's habit, which is somewhat variable but always very dense. The flexible shoots of this fir bear long, slender, slightly curved needles measuring 4 to 7 cm in length. Their colour is between grey and glaucous. They emit a pleasant citrus fragrance. The tree's small yellow spring buds are highly resinous and its cones are brownish-purple. They only form on mature specimens.

The Abies concolour 'Compacta' is ideal for bringing a year-round soft colour to the garden. It will work wonders at the centre of a small flower bed surrounded by ground-cover plants like the aubrieta 'Cascade Blue', or in a rockery, paired with heathers such as the Calluna vulgaris 'Dark Beauty', for example. The true ornamental qualities of dwarf conifers naturally stand out in the design of a contemporary garden that emphasises the aesthetics of shapes, silhouettes, and textures. The strong personality of this type of plant provides lasting structure to even the simplest setting.

Planting and care

Plant the Abies concolour 'Compacta' from September to November or from February to May, in ordinary but well-drained, even rocky, humus-enriched, not too dry soil in summer, in dappled sunlight or partial shade. This plant dislikes very hot climates despite tolerating summer drought quite well once properly rooted. Water the plants regularly during the two to three summers following planting. Young Colorado firs should be watered during prolonged heatwaves. They do not like excessively chalky soil.
