Description

With its graceful habit and flared flowers of exceptional refinement, the Tulip viridiflora 'Blushing Artist' stands out with its ivory petals adorned with green flames and delicate rosy touches. This charming variety blooms in mid-spring on sturdy, tall stems, ideal for borders, pots, or cut flowers. As a fine representative of the viridiflora group, its flowers last up to 3 weeks. Undemanding but sensitive to waterlogged conditions, it prefers autumn planting in cool soil to establish deeply before winter. Its long flowering period and decorative foliage make it a precious choice for natural, romantic, or structured gardens.

The Tulipa viridiflora 'Blushing Artist' belonging to the Liliaceae family is a viridiflora cultivar resulting from mutation or hybridisation within the vast Tulipa × gesneriana species. This variety is distinguished by its erect and slender habit reaching 40–60 cm in height in open ground with a foliar diameter of 10–20 cm. Originating from temperate Asia (Asia Minor, Iran, and Turkestan), Viridiflora tulips, are recognised for their petals marked with characteristic green striations, a heritage from their wild range. The growth of 'Blushing Artist' is rapid in spring; its robust stems emerge from March to reach their full size within weeks, and the plant produces few offsets, developing mainly through its bulbs and bulblets. The flowers of 7 to 10 cm in diameter bloom in May, revealing ivory petals accentuated with a pink blush and enhanced by broad green stripes; their structure is fluted and elegant. Their sturdiness enables them to last nearly three weeks. The deciduous foliage consists of lanceolate, soft green leaves edged with white, approximately 15–20 cm long and 5–7 cm wide, offering a visual appeal even after flowering. The stems are smooth, cylindrical, and light green. The root system is formed around a medium-sized central bulb (12 cm in circumference), suited to well-drained soil that is not waterlogged, ensuring a good establishment in spring. This retro cultivar evokes the historic viridiflora tulips that appeared as early as the 18th century, renowned for extending the late tulip season, a trait perpetuated by the 'Blushing Artist' variety.

The 'Blushing Artist' tulip unfolds its discreet charm between filtered light and light shade, where its ivory, soft green, and pale pink hues achieve their full intensity. Planted in scattered groups at the foot of perennials with grey or bluish foliage like stachys or early hostas, it imparts a gentle and refined contrast. It performs wonderfully in pots on a patio, accompanied by pansies or lady's mantle. To create a harmonious floral display, it can subtly complement tulips like the 'Spring Green', 'Mount Tacoma', and 'Green Spirit', in a soft and nuanced palette that evokes the first days of May in an English garden.

Planting and care

Plant the Tulipe viridiflora Blushing Artist bulbs in autumn, from September to December, at a depth of 15 cm, spacing them 10 cm apart. Planting should be done in ordinary, slightly acidic, neutral, or slightly chalky, loose, well-worked, and well-drained soil. Never add poorly decomposed manure or compost to the planting soil, as this could cause the bulbs to rot. The tulip will grow well in soil that is cool to dry in summer. Place it in a good sunny position or in partial shade. Once flowering is over, it is best to remove the fruits to avoid exhausting the plant.
