Description

The Mount Tacoma Tulip is an old double variety, almost white, always appreciated in the garden and in a vase for its strength, generosity, and prolific nature. It produces a huge flower, well doubled, referred to as a peony-like flower in the world of tulips. It displays a refined and soothing colour, in ivory white just warmed with cream at the centre. A reliable choice, with a colour that is very easy to match with other late double varieties, as well as with perennial flowerings.

The 'Mount Tacoma' Tulip belongs to the Lily family. Of horticultural origin, introduced in 1914, it is currently classified in the group of 'Late Double Tulips' (Group 11), which share the main characteristic of very double and rumpled flowers, in the shape of peonies. 'Mount Tacoma' is of medium size (40 cm (16in)), solid and stocky, and its flower is of beautiful size, with a diameter of 10 cm (4in), double and slightly ruffled. Its colour palette, very pale, includes white, ivory and the yellow of the stamens. The flowering takes place around mid-May, depending on the climate, at the end of the tulip season.

The late double tulip Mount Tacoma finds its place in large beds. It can also be planted in borders, rock gardens, flower beds, as well as in pots and containers. This tulip enhances balconies and terraces very well. It perfectly accompanies tall perennials (foxgloves, early landscape roses, peonies), and it is ideal for creating elegant bouquets. In a vase, use very little water, just an inch at the bottom is enough! Moreover, if your tulips open too quickly, you can add two to three ice cubes in the vase every day. Unmatched for bringing the colour of spring to pots or sunny gardens, don't forget to consider the height and flowering period when designing your beds, as these parameters vary significantly from one cultivar to another. It is wise to plant a few more bulbs for cutting, as they make beautiful cut flowers that last a long time in a vase.

Planting and care

Plant your tulips as soon as possible in a well-drained soil. Loosen the soil deeply. Plant them at a depth of 15 cm (6in) (Bulbs should be covered with soil twice their height). Space the bulbs a few cm apart, making sure they do not touch. Choose a sunny exposure for better flowering. After flowering, cut the flower stalks and let the leaves dry completely before cutting them. After flowering, their foliage becomes unsightly and we recommend planting Heucheras, Foamflowers, Brunneras, Bleeding Hearts, and Cypress Spurge, in the foreground of your flower beds. Their foliage will enhance the colours of your tulips and during the season, they will elegantly hide their yellowing leaves.
