More information

A botanical rarity that catches every eye with its elongated, deeply cut leaves resembling outstretched wings. Like many philodendrons, this one develops long stems that seek to cling to and climb up any support. Indoors, it will appreciate a moss pole or trellis, which will further highlight its eccentric leaves. Provide it with bright, indirect light and not-too-dry ambient air, and it will reveal its full tropical potential!

Description

The Philodendron joepii is a rare, sought-after tropical climbing plant by collectors for its highly unusual foliage. This sculptural liana makes a striking statement in urban jungle or contemporary interiors. To fully appreciate its form, provide it with a support such as a moss pole along with light, warmth, and humid ambient air.

Belonging to the Araceae family, the Philodendron x joepii has an uncertain botanical status and is rarely found in the wild. According to the botanical explorer Joep Moonen, it may be a natural hybrid between Philodendron bipennifolium and P. pedatum, two species present at his discovery site in French Guiana. This presumed origin would explain its unique appearance and extreme rarity. A climbing plant, the Philodendron joepii develops long woody stems supported by aerial roots that cling to a support. The growth of this plant is relatively slow, reaching a height of 1.5 to 3 m depending on growing conditions. Its spectacular leaves which can grow up to 90 cm long display an unusual trilobed shape, with flared upper lobes and a tapered, arrow-like tip. Their texture is smooth and glossy, with a deep green hue accentuated by prominent veins.

Warning - Like many philodendrons, this plant is toxic if ingested.

For an urban jungle effect, pair the Philodendron joepii with a Monstera adansonii, known for its perforated foliage. This plant works equally well in a minimalist or eclectic setting, adding a touch of sophisticated greenery.

Location

With its sculptural allure, the Philodendron joepii makes a striking statement in a bright living room, tropical conservatory, or even a stylish office. Place it near a large window without direct sunlight, in a matte ceramic decorative pot or a natural wicker planter to enhance its organic appeal. On a wooden support or moss pole, it will fully display its climbing potential. A humidity level of at least 60% is required for harmonious growth.

Maintenance and care

Keep the compost slightly moist but not waterlogged. Water more frequently in summer and reduce in winter. Mist regularly to recreate a tropical atmosphere.

Potting advice, substrates and fertilisers

Repot preferably in spring, every 2 to 3 years, or when the roots start to outgrow the pot. Use a slightly larger container.
Use a well-draining compost mix (a blend of houseplant compost, coconut fibre, bark, and perlite). Add clay pebbles to the bottom of the pot for drainage.
Apply a liquid fertiliser for green plants (NPK 20-20-20) from March to September, every 2 to 3 weeks in a weak dilution to avoid mineral salt build-up.

Houseplant care

The plant may lose its lower leaves as it ages, which is normal. Clean the leaves regularly with a damp cloth to prevent dust build-up.
Remove any yellow or damaged leaves regularly. Prune overly long stems if the plant becomes too large or asymmetrical. This will encourage branching.

Disease and pest advice

In case of a mealybug infestation, clean the leaves with a cloth soaked in a mixture of warm water and black soap. Repeat the process every 3-4 days until they disappear.
