Description

With Philodendron tuxtlanum ‘Royal Queen’, the exuberance and colour of South American tropical forests come right into your home. This exceptional variety captivates with its intense purple foliage, gradually evolving into a glossy dark green. Perfect for contemporary, bohemian or traditional decors, this climbing philodendron pairs beautifully with both natural and modern materials. To ensure successful growth, place it in a bright spot without direct sunlight and maintain moderate humidity around it: an occasional misting will work wonders!

Philodendron 'Royal Queen' belongs to the Araceae family. Sources differ regarding its origin, but it is believed this variety stems from Philodendron tuxtlanum. The latter is a perennial climbing plant native to the tropical mountain forests of Mexico. Its large, arrow-shaped leaves, with a smooth and slightly waxy texture, capture ambient moisture—a typical trait of philodendrons. The foliage of the Philodendron 'Royal Queen' is what makes it so unique. Young leaves emerge in deep purple hues before maturing into a glossy dark green, with delicately marked veins adding texture to their surface. The leaves, which can reach 25 to 35 cm in length, have a striking presence. This plant climbs slowly and, when mature, reaches between 60 and 90 cm in height, with a similar spread. A support will be needed to guide its growth and showcase its beauty. Indoors, it thrives in indirect light, consistent humidity, and warm temperatures between 18 and 25 °C. The plant struggles with temperatures below 12 °C. Like most philodendrons, it is toxic if ingested, particularly to pets and children.

Philodendron tuxtlanum 'Royal Queen' thrives in any bright and cosy room, such as a living room, bedroom, or even a slightly heated conservatory. It’s a plant that combines elegance and originality!

Maintenance and care

Keep the substrate slightly moist without excess. Water only when the top of the compost is dry and mist regularly, especially in winter.

Potting advice, substrates and fertilisers

Repot preferably in spring, every 2 to 3 years, or when the roots start to outgrow the pot. Use a slightly larger container.
Use a mixture of houseplant compost with added perlite or clay pebbles for good aeration.
Apply a liquid fertiliser for houseplants (NPK 10-10-10) every two weeks in spring and summer. Reduce to once a month in autumn and stop in winter.

Houseplant care

Clean the leaves regularly with a damp cloth to prevent dust buildup.
If some stems become too long or unruly, a light trim can help restore a balanced shape.

Disease and pest advice

In case of scale insects, clean the leaves with a cloth soaked in soapy water and apply an appropriate organic treatment.
