Description

Alocasia 'Portodora' is a particularly vigorous variety of Elephant Ear, with an imposing habit and thick foliage. Its very large, lance-shaped leaves with wavy edges are very thick and stand erect. Under optimal growing conditions, this houseplant can exceed two metres in height. It thrives in a humid atmosphere and abundant light, but dislikes direct sunlight. This majestic plant will find its place in a spacious room with sufficient ceiling height.

Alocasia 'Portodora' belongs to the Araceae family, just like Monstera and Philodendron. This horticultural cultivar is an American creation whose parents originate from the tropical forests of Southeast Asia, particularly in India, China, and the Philippines. These plants grow naturally in rich, moist, and well-drained soils. Alocasia 'Portodora' develops slowly but can reach 2 to 2.50 metres in height and slightly less in width at maturity, under good light and humidity conditions. Its upright habit and immense erect leaves give it a very tropical appearance. This cultivar can be taken outside during the warmer season, gradually acclimatising it to the sun. Its rootstock can tolerate frost down to approximately -5°C under a thick protective mulch.

Indoors, to help it thrive, place Alocasia 'Portodora' in a bright room, but never in direct sunlight behind a window. The air humidity should be maintained around 60-70% to prevent its leaves from drying out, using a humidifier, for example. The growing substrate should remain slightly moist, without excess water, as the roots of Alocasias dislike stagnant water as much as drought. The ideal temperature for this plant is between 15 and 27°C, ideally around 20°C.

Alocasia 'Portodora' is perfect for a tropical ambiance, or as the sole plant in a large room. You can pair it with other plants from the Araceae family, such as Monsteras and Philodendrons, which have similar requirements for humidity and light. This combination enhances the lush and exotic side of interior decor. Alocasia 'Portodora' is an excellent choice for enriching interiors of any style.

Location

Maintenance and care

Potting advice, substrates and fertilisers

Remove yellowed, stained, or damaged leaves.

Disease and pest advice
