Description

Alocasia odora 'Batik' is a variegated variety of Elephant's Ear and, as is often the case with variegated cultivars, it develops highly sculptural foliage. It gradually produces large, elongated heart-shaped leaves, composed of a fine network of splashes and spots of white and grey-green. Each leaf displays a completely different variegation pattern. This houseplant enjoys moderate to bright light, without direct sunlight. Ensure to keep its substrate slightly moist without overwatering.

Alocasia odora 'Batik' belongs to the Araceae family, which includes many tropical plants with spectacular foliage. This horticultural cultivar grows to medium to large sizes: at maturity, it reaches a height and spread of about 75 cm, but can grow larger under optimal conditions. The plant has an upright habit and slow growth. Its leaves are elongated and wavy. Native to India, China, and the Philippines, Alocasia odora, the botanical species from which this cultivar originates, grows naturally in rich, well-drained soils under dense, humid cover. These conditions explain its specific needs: filtered light, high humidity (around 60-70%), and a constant temperature between 15 and 27°C. Its leaves and stems contain toxic compounds that can cause irritation if ingested. Originating from Southeast Asia, Alocasias are plants of warm, humid tropical climates and partial shade. While stunning, they can sometimes be challenging to acclimate to our interiors, where the air is too dry. Their roots are also sensitive to excess moisture, as well as to a lack of water. The ideal temperature for growing them is around 20°C.

Alocasia odora 'Batik' is an elegant and highly ornamental plant. Its exotic and refined appearance blends well in a minimalist style, where it becomes a focal point, as well as in a tropical setting, where it enhances the lush character of the space and naturally finds more ambient humidity surrounded by its peers. You can place a humidifier nearby. Pair it with plants that have similar needs, such as other Araceae like Monstera or Philodendron.
