Description

The Double Early Tulip ‘Yellow Margarita’ is a springtime jewel that catches the eye with its large, bright yellow flowers of silky texture, featuring numerous slightly undulate petals reminiscent of a peony. Its upright, balanced and compact habit makes it an ideal candidate for beds, borders and container compositions. Flowering from early April, it thrives in full sun or partial shade in light, fertile, and perfectly drained soil. Ideal for enhancing spring displays and enhancing cut flower arrangements.

The Double Early Tulip ‘Yellow Margarita’ belongs to the Liliaceae family and the Double Early group (division 1), whose main characteristic is that they all flower at the same height, making them a category favoured by enthusiasts of well-structured beds. This Dutch cultivar from a growing programme by Jan de Wit is distinguished by its large, double, peony-style butterfly 7–9 cm in diameter flowers of a bright canary yellow. In the ground, this erect tulip typically reaches 35–40 cm in height with a spread of 15–20 cm. Its growth is rapid in spring, and its enchanting flowering occurs in April, with its light fragrance and excellent stem-holding quality, enhanced by its sturdy stems. Unlike botanical bulbs, it does not produce bulblets en masse, but can naturalise quietly. The double flowers open widely, formed of numerous overlapping, slightly striate tepals with slightly crenate tips. The deciduous foliage consists of glossy, lanceolate leaves which are naturally shed after flowering. The root system is based on a spherical 12 cm bulb with superficial fasciculate roots, which should be planted at a depth of 15–20 cm. The ‘Yellow Margarita’ has quickly gained popularity in spring displays for its flamboyant flowering and its ability to last up to 10 days as a cut flower, making it a favourite of florists and lovers of elegant gardens.

In spring gardens, the ‘Yellow Margarita’ tulip stands out with its golden, full and generous corollas, like bursts of sunshine. It integrates beautifully into light borders or elegant pots with bluebells, forget-me-nots, grape hyacinths, where its bold hue finds the subtle echo of ‘Minnow’ daffodils. Pairing it with the double tulip ‘Angelique’, the tulip ‘Royal Acres’ or the tulip ‘Red Princess’ will produce a both structured and dynamic array full of texture and colour contrasts. Used with measure, it will contribute flashes of brightness to the carefully designed overall vegetation picture.

Planting and care

Plant the double early Tulip Yellow Margarita bulbs in autumn, from September to December, at a depth of 15 cm, spacing them 10 cm apart. Planting should be done in ordinary, slightly acidic, neutral, or slightly calcareous, loose, well-worked, and well-drained soil. Never add poorly decomposed manure or compost to the planting soil, as this could cause the bulbs to rot. The tulip will grow well in soil that is cool to dry in summer. Place it in a good, sunny position or in partial shade. Once flowering is over, it is best to remove the fruits to avoid exhausting the plant.
