More information

A variety with large, cup-shaped, flared flowers of pure yellow, borne on sturdy stems and framed by grey-green lanceolate leaves. This upright-habit cultivar, suitable for modern landscapes or pots, flowers in early spring, from March to April, with good rain resistance thanks to its robust stem. Hardy, it withstands cold winters and tolerates moderate drought once the soil is well-drained. It prefers full sun or partial shade and a rich growing medium. Thanks to its early flowering, it is a valuable landscaping asset, whether in borders, pots, or beds, and naturalises easily in the garden.

Description

The Tulipa fosteriana 'Yellow Empress' illuminates the first days of spring with its large, bright yellow, cup-shaped flowers borne on sturdy stems approximately 40 cm tall. Its upright habit, broad glaucous green leaves, and elegant appearance make it a valuable ornamental plant for beds, borders, and container arrangements. Very hardy, it adapts to all climates provided that it is planted in well-drained soil, in full sun or partial shade, with dry soil in summer during bulb dormancy. This early variety flowers from March, requires little maintenance, and naturalises easily. its versatility enables it to pair effortlessly with other spring bulbs to create bright displays.

The Tulipa fosteriana belongs to the Liliaceae botanical family. It is a very hardy botanical species native to Turkestan, growing on rocky slopes at around 1,500 m altitude. Classified in Division 13, Foster tulips are distinguished by their vigour: they are among the very first to flower, sometimes as early as mid-March, and possess a remarkable ability to naturalise and multiply spontaneously, making renewal in the garden rarely necessary. The 'Yellow Empress', a historical cultivar registered in the Netherlands in 1944, has an erect habit, glaucous, lanceolate, deciduous foliage, and rapid growth: in open ground it reaches 40–45 cm in height with a spread of 15–30 cm. The plant produces bulblets at the base which allow for propagation, and a few offsets will contribute to a gradual naturalisation. The rounded, cup-shaped flowers of about 12 cm in diameter are a pure yellow, borne on a sturdy stem, and they open widely in March-April. The foliage consisting of 3 to 5 broad leaves 15–25 cm long, is a brownish grey-green colour and disappears after flowering. The root system houses a round bulb 4–7 cm in diameter, which is the source of winter survival. Like other Fosteriana tulips, The 'Yellow Empress' quickly became established in 20th-century English gardens for its early flowering and robustness, becoming a staple of natural spring cut flower arrangements.

In a late winter garden where colours are still shy, the 'Yellow Empress' tulip brings an irresistible sunny brightness. Its pure yellow hue can be subtly echoed when mingled with the pastel tones of 'Ice Follies' daffodils or 'Cream Beauty' crocuses, while its defined lines are brought out against the silver foliage of stachys or artemisia. In a pot, it becomes the luminous centre of a spring display, accompanied by cream pansies and blue muscari. It pairs wonderfully with 'Red Emperor', 'Purple Prince', and 'Apricot Emperor' tulips, cultivars with similarly early flowering and habit, creating a dynamic and refined display.

Planting and care

Plant your Tulipa fosteriana 'Yellow Empress' as soon as possible in well-drained soil, even if dry in summer. Loosen the soil deeply. Plant at a 15 cm depth (bulbs should be covered with twice their height of soil). Space the bulbs a few centimetres apart, ensuring they do not touch. Choose a sunny position for better flowering. After flowering, cut the flower stems and allow the leaves to dry out completely before cutting them. After flowering, their foliage becomes faded and unsightly; we recommend planting perennials in the foreground of your borders. Their foliage will enhance the colours of your tulips and, as the season progresses, will elegantly conceal their yellowed leaves.
