Description

Philodendron 'Imperial Red' is a particularly colourful houseplant that deserves a prime spot in your home. Its broad, glossy leaves, coppery red when young, gradually turn to dark green as they mature, creating a luxurious multicoloured cluster. Its compact habit makes it easy to accommodate in a house or flat. For its comfort, place it in a bright spot, away from direct sunlight, in an atmosphere that isn't too dry.

Philodendron 'Imperial Red' is a cultivar of Philodendron erubescens, belonging to the Araceae family. This cultivar, developed in the 1980s, is prized for its compact, bushy habit and the colouring of its foliage. The plant reaches between 60 and 90 cm in height and spread indoors, depending on growing conditions. This perennial develops tough, glossy, ovate leaves which emerge in intense red before gradually turning to coppery red and then dark green as they mature. The stems, also red initially, turn green at maturity. The growth is rapid, and the plant will quickly make an impact. Indoors, flowering is rare, but in its natural habitat, the species produces fragrant flowers with a dark red spathe. Philodendron 'Imperial Red' is toxic if ingested to humans and pets, due to the presence of calcium oxalate in its leaves and sap.

Philodendron 'Imperial Red' is a versatile plant that fits into almost any room in the house. Its refined appearance suits sophisticated decors, but it also pairs well with more relaxed, natural interiors, alongside a Calathea orbifolia or another philodendron like P. Incensi.

Location

Avoid direct sunlight, which can scorch the leaves, and excess water that promotes root rot. Place it in a bright living room, where its dark red leaves will add a chic tropical touch to a contemporary or bohemian decor. It's also perfect for an office, creating a calming and inspiring atmosphere, or in a conservatory, where it benefits from diffuse light. To showcase it, choose an elegant ceramic or concrete pot in neutral tones, or place it on a shelf to play with verticality.

Maintenance and care

Water when the top 2-3 cm of the compost is dry. Mist regularly to maintain high humidity, especially during the heating season.

Potting advice, substrates and fertilisers

Repot preferably in spring, every 2 to 3 years, or when the roots start to outgrow the pot. Use a slightly larger container.
Use a mixture of houseplant compost, enriched with perlite or sand for drainage. Add clay pebbles at the bottom of the pot to prevent water stagnation.
Apply a liquid fertiliser for green plants, rich in nitrogen (NPK 10-10-10). Applied every 4 to 6 weeks in spring and summer.

Houseplant care

Low maintenance, but keep an eye out for leaf drop or yellowing, often linked to over or under-watering.
No pruning is required, simply remove damaged or yellowed leaves.

Disease and pest advice

In case of scale insects, clean the leaves with a cloth soaked in soapy water and apply an appropriate organic treatment.
