Description

Originating from northwestern Turkey to the Caucasus, northeastern Greece, the Oriental Hellebore mix is a perennial plant that will brighten up the shaded areas of your garden in winter. It comes in various colours, ranging from white to dark red, and including pink and speckled. It is a hardy plant that can tolerate temperatures as low as -15°C (5°F). It has spreading palmate basal leaves, slightly dentate, with a dark green and glossy colour. These are evergreen leaves, 30 to 40 cm (12 to 16in) long, composed of 7 to 9 leaflets.

The Oriental Hellebore reaches a height of 40 cm (16in) and spreads out over 30 cm (12in) when mature. From January to March, a bouquet of single flowers forms, measuring 5 to 7 cm (2 to 3in) in diameter. These are cup-shaped and slightly drooping flowers. The Hellebore is a bushy plant. It does not like to be moved once established, as the young shoots take some time to flower.

This toxic plant should be handled with caution. It is suitable both as cut flowers and in borders, flower beds, or even in containers. Over time, the flowers of the hellebore do not wilt like the majority of other flowers, but dry up instead.

Planting and care

Helleborus orientalis grows in most soils that are rich and neutral in partial or light shade, while sheltering it from the wind. This plant can be planted from early autumn to spring to bloom from January to March. It thrives in deeply tilled soil mixed with a quantity of organic matter. To fertilise, use bone meal or another organic fertiliser. In acidic soil, preferably add a bit of lime. Water the plants well after planting and then add a layer of mulch 2 to 5 cm (1 to 2in) thick. Regularly remove wilted leaves. Trim most of the leaves to highlight the flowers. Be careful not to plant the plants too close to each other to promote their development. The hellebore does not like stagnant water, as it may cause it to rot.
